Chapter 8 - For Your Baby

But Amelia knew the deeper victory was quieter.
It was not posting the footage for strangers to judge.
It was sending it only when lies tried to enter the family again.
It was realizing her mother’s tears were not proof of innocence.
It was learning that a baby’s needs did not have to compete with a grown man’s bad choices.
It was watching guests put their envelopes back into the box with the baby’s name written clearly on them.
It was building a project so other mothers could protect the help meant for their children.
And it was Amelia, years later, sitting beside a young pregnant woman at a community center table while the woman cried over a stolen baby shower fund.
“My mom says I’m heartless if I don’t help my brother,” the woman whispered.
Amelia looked down at the woman’s folder.
Then at the fear she recognized too well.
“No,” Amelia said gently. “You’re not heartless.”
The woman wiped her eyes.
“Then what am I?”
May you like
Amelia smiled softly.
“A mother,” she said. “And we’re going to protect what belongs to your baby.”
