Chapter 10 - THE SECOND KNOCK

One year after the slap, Loretta stood in the same kitchen.
Morning sunlight filled the room.
There was no smoke.
No shouting.
No fear.
On the island sat a framed photograph of Henry and a stack of approved grants for emergency housing, legal aid, and medical advocacy.
Sloan was convicted on multiple counts of fraud, conspiracy, and elder abuse.
Harbor View closed.
Several attorneys lost their licenses.
Two judges resigned.
Daniel wrote Loretta every month from prison.
For a long time, she did not answer.
Then one day, she sent a single sentence.
Tell the truth even when it costs you.
His next letter contained no excuses.
Loretta kept it.
She did not mistake it for redemption.
But she allowed it to be a beginning.
That evening, Marcus arrived with news.
The foundation had recovered enough stolen property to restore homes to six families.
Loretta smiled.
Henry’s house had become more powerful than Daniel ever imagined.
Not because of its value.
Because of what now happened inside it.
After Marcus left, Loretta made coffee and sat alone.
A knock sounded at the front door.
For one second, her body remembered the old fear.
Then she stood.
She did not tremble.
At the door was a delivery officer holding a sealed envelope.
Inside was a notice from another state.
A woman had died in a care facility connected to Sloan’s former business partner.
The partner had disappeared.
At the bottom of the page was a handwritten note.
Mrs. Hayes, you were right. Sloan was not working alone.
Loretta looked down the quiet street.
A dark car turned the corner and vanished.
Behind her, Henry’s words rested beneath glass.
Protect dignity before property.
Loretta picked up her phone.
Her hand was perfectly steady.
She pressed Marcus’s contact.
When he answered, she said the same words she had spoken one year earlier.
“I need your help.”
Then came another knock.
Louder.
More urgent.
Loretta turned toward the door as a shadow moved behind the frosted glass.
Cutting through the silence was a familiar woman’s voice.
“Mrs. Hayes, please. She knows where I live.”
May you like
Loretta opened the door.
And the fight began again.
