Chapter 5 - THE WOMAN WHO CALLED

The camera contained three months of footage.
Sloan had installed it.
At first, investigators assumed she wanted to monitor Loretta.
Then they found recordings of Daniel and Sloan discussing the fraud.
They talked about the forged deed.
The guardianship petition.
The transfers.
They even discussed provoking Loretta into an angry outburst on video.
But the camera also captured something unexpected.
Sloan arguing with a third person.
A woman named Claire Benton.
Claire had worked for Sloan’s boutique.
She had discovered the financial scheme and threatened to expose it.
Sloan fired her.
Daniel threatened her.
Claire was the woman who called Marcus.
She had retained access to the hidden camera through an app.
Police located her in a motel outside town.
She agreed to testify.
Claire revealed that Sloan had used the same method before.
Her first husband’s mother had also been declared incompetent.
The woman died in a private care facility after losing control of her property.
Sloan inherited through her husband.
Months later, the husband died in a car accident.
No charges were filed.
Loretta felt cold when she heard the story.
Daniel had become cruel.
But Sloan had practiced this kind of cruelty before.
Claire handed investigators a flash drive containing Sloan’s business records.
One file was labeled WILLOW.
Inside was a timeline.
Month 1: Move in.
Month 2: Establish dependence.
Month 3: Control mail and medications.
Month 4: Create incidents.
Month 5: File guardianship.
Month 6: Transfer assets.
At the bottom was one final note.
