Chapter 1 - Want Them to Hear Your Voice?

Vanessa struck Daniel across the face in the middle of the backyard party.

The slap cracked through the afternoon like a board breaking.

Daniel’s head snapped sideways.

His olive field jacket shifted with the force, his body turning half a step before he caught his balance on the grass. A red mark began spreading across his left cheek almost instantly.

The children saw everything.

Lily screamed.

Owen froze with a paper plate of cookies tipping in his hands until the cookies slid off and scattered near his sneakers.

Claire gasped and grabbed Daniel’s forearm, her fingers digging into the sleeve of his jacket.

Vanessa stood inches from him, cheeks flushed from wine, blonde hair perfect despite the cruelty twisting her face. One hand still hung in the air after the slap. In the other, her half-empty wineglass trembled.

“You’re not their real father!”

The backyard went silent.

Not quiet.

Silent.

The kind of silence that makes balloons stop looking festive and cake tables look suddenly obscene.

Daniel turned his face back slowly.

He touched his cheek once.

Lowered his hand.

Then locked eyes with Vanessa.

His voice was low enough that everyone leaned in to hear it.

“Touch me again.”

Vanessa laughed, but it came out too sharp.

Too drunk.

Too desperate.

Claire moved between them, auburn hair shaking around her face.

“Vanessa, shut your mouth.”

Vanessa pointed past Daniel toward Lily and Owen.

Claire knocked the pointing hand away without striking her.

Lily clutched the back of Claire’s cream cardigan, crying silently now. Owen stood near the table, eyes glossy, staring at Daniel’s red cheek like the slap had landed on something inside him too.

Then the boy took one small step forward.

“Are you still our dad?”

Daniel’s face changed.

The fury did not vanish.

It moved aside for something older.

Deeper.

He turned away from Vanessa immediately and knelt just enough to pull Owen against him with one arm. With the other, he reached for Lily.

“Always,” he said.

Lily came to him too, her yellow floral dress brushing against his tan trousers as she gripped his jacket.

Vanessa rolled her eyes.

“Oh, please.”

Daniel’s expression hardened again.

He stood, keeping the children partly behind him.

Then he reached into the inside pocket of his jacket and removed his smartphone.

Vanessa’s smile flickered.

Just once.

But Claire saw it.

Daniel held the phone in his palm.

“Since you brought it up…”

He tapped the screen.

A moving audio waveform appeared.

No readable words.

No explanation.

Just sound waiting to be released.

Vanessa lunged.

Daniel pivoted sharply, pulling the phone out of reach and placing his body between her and the children.

“Daniel,” Claire whispered.

She recognized the screen now.

The recording app.

The one he had shown her three weeks earlier and said, “Not yet. If I play it too soon, she’ll make it about us attacking her.”

Now he held the phone near the portable speaker beside the birthday decorations.

He did not press play.

His thumb hovered.

Vanessa’s face drained.

The wineglass shook in her hand.

Relatives turned toward her.

One uncle lowered his red plastic cup.

A cousin whispered, “What recording?”

Daniel’s voice was quiet.

Devastating.

“Want them to hear your voice?”

May you like

Vanessa stared at the phone like it had become a loaded weapon.

And for the first time all afternoon, she looked sober.
