Chapter 9 - Always

Years later, people still told the dramatic version.

The Portland backyard.

Daniel in the olive field jacket.

Claire in denim overalls and a cream cardigan.

Lily in a yellow floral dress.

Owen in the green varsity jacket.

Vanessa storming forward with wine on her breath and jealousy in her eyes.

The single hard slap.

You’re not their real father!

Daniel’s head turning from the impact.

The red mark blooming on his cheek.

Lily screaming.

Owen asking, Are you still our dad?

Daniel pulling both children close.

Always.

The phone from his jacket.

The audio waveform.

Since you brought it up…

Vanessa lunging.

Daniel pivoting away.

Want them to hear your voice?

It sounded like a story about a recording.

And yes, part of it was.

There was power in Vanessa realizing her own voice could expose what her polished face tried to hide.

There was satisfaction in watching the backyard turn from awkward amusement to suspicion.

There was satisfaction in Daniel refusing to play the audio in front of the children, because he understood that truth used carelessly can become another weapon.

But the deeper story was not the recording.

It was the question Owen asked.

Are you still our dad?

That was the wound Vanessa wanted.

Not Daniel’s cheek.

Not Claire’s pride.

The children’s certainty.

She wanted them to look at the man who packed lunches, checked homework, drove to urgent care, fixed night-lights, remembered allergies, learned school passwords, and signed permission slips, and wonder whether he had been temporary all along.

Daniel answered with one word.

May you like

Always.

And then he lived long enough for the law, the family, and the children’s own hearts to catch up.
