Chapter 12 - My Father’s Name Came Off the Building Before Lucy’s Name Went On Anything

Vale Family Foundation occupied a restored stone building my father had donated.
The entrance read:
EDWARD J. VALE CENTER FOR COMMUNITY IMPACT
I had walked under those words for years.
After the review, several board members wanted:
nothing changed.
“Edward built the foundation.”
True.
“His legacy is larger than one governance failure.”
Also true.
I surprised everyone.
“I want his name removed.”
Alejandro later asked:
“Are you sure?”
“No.”
Good answer.
I did not want to erase:
my father.
He funded:
real scholarships,
housing,
hospitals.
He also built systems where:
his authority was too difficult to challenge.
Renaming the building was not declaring:
every good thing fake.
It was deciding the institution no longer needed to function as:
his monument.
We renamed it:
Vale Community Center
Simple.
Some donors complained.
One accused me of:
“surrendering to modern guilt.”
Fine.
Lucy did not ask us to name:
anything
after her.
Good.
I had started imagining:
Lucille Carver Employee Justice Fund.
She laughed when I mentioned it.
“Absolutely not.”
“Why?”
“I spent twenty years trying to be a person, Mari.”
“Don’t turn me into a program.”
Fair.
So we created a worker emergency grant program with:
independent review,
written criteria,
published annual payment data.
No family name.
No Lucy name.
Structure.
Not monument.
May you like
That pleased her more.
