Chapter 13 - My Marriage Almost Broke Over the Woman Alejandro Protected From Me

For months I praised Alejandro for:
standing up to me.
Then punished him emotionally for:
doing it.
Humans are impressive that way.
Every time he questioned a decision involving Lucy, I heard:
You are becoming your father.
I snapped.
He withdrew.
Then one night he said:
“I don’t know who I’m allowed to disagree with anymore.”
I stared.
“What does that mean?”
“If I agree with you, I’m enabling you.”
“If I disagree, you act like I’m putting Lucy above my wife.”
“That isn’t true.”
He just looked at me.
It was.
I sat down.
He continued.
“I did not bring Lucy inside because I knew who she was.”
“I brought her inside because she was an elderly woman sitting near our gate looking sick.”
“That should have been enough.”
It was.
Then:
“The birthmark shouldn’t have been necessary for you to see her as someone who deserved dignity.”
That sentence hurt more than:
anything else.
Because there it was.
If Lucy had been:
nobody from my childhood,
my behavior in the bathroom would still have been wrong.
I had allowed the identity reveal to make the story:
tragic.
As though shoving a random homeless woman would have been:
less tragic.
I cried.
Then said:
“I’m ashamed.”
Alejandro answered:
“I know.”
No:
don’t be.
No:
you’re a good person.
I appreciated that eventually.
We went to counseling.
Not because our marriage was collapsing beyond repair.
Because I needed to learn how to receive:
correction
without converting it into:
rejection.
That skill turned out to be useful far beyond:
May you like
Lucy.
