Chapter 1 - The Wedding Delaney Couldn’t Stay Silent Through

By the time I reached my brother’s wedding tent, Keaton was already on the floor.

My name is Vaughn.

I was forty-one years old, Keaton’s younger brother, and Delaney’s uncle.

The reception was taking place beneath a huge white tent on a private Virginia estate. Daylight poured through the open sides. Gold chairs surrounded a polished wooden dance floor. White flowers climbed the ceremony arch, and nearly a hundred formally dressed guests stood around in stunned silence.

In the center of all of them was my twelve-year-old niece.

Delaney.

Petite.

Long chestnut-brown hair.

Pale-pink party dress.

Freckles scattered across a face twisted with fury.

And directly beneath her was her father.

My brother.

Keaton had just married Sabine less than an hour earlier.

He still wore his black wedding suit and tie.

A reception chair lay overturned beside him.

I learned afterward exactly how he got there.

Delaney had walked straight toward him in the middle of the reception.

Keaton barely had time to turn.

She drove one angry punch into his chest.

Hard enough to knock him backward.

He stumbled directly into one of the gold reception chairs.

The chair tipped.

Keaton went down with it.

His back and hip hit the wooden dance floor, leaving him shocked but not seriously injured.

Delaney stood over him.

“DAD, YOU’VE DESTROYED ENOUGH!”

No second punch.

Instead, she immediately dropped into a crouch.

She grabbed both lapels of Keaton’s same black wedding jacket and pulled his upper body slightly upward.

“Delaney!”

Keaton grabbed at her wrists without striking her.

“Delaney—let go of your dad!”

She refused.

Sabine stood several feet away in her white lace wedding gown, one hand rising to her mouth.

She looked horrified.

Not at Delaney first.

At Keaton.

“Keaton, what did you do?!”

Delaney kept both fists clenched in his lapels.

Her face was inches from his.

“I’M DONE WATCHING YOU HURT MOM!”

Keaton went completely still.

That was when I reached the tent.

I had been outside taking a call related to one of our family businesses. The moment I heard shouting, I ran.

I came through the side opening and saw Delaney crouched over her father.

Sabine frozen nearby.

Guests watching.

A chair on its side.

I rushed straight toward them.

“DELANEY! ENOUGH—LET YOUR DAD GO!”

She looked at me.

Not afraid.

Desperate.

I reached the confrontation and moved between her and Sabine, extending both arms so nobody moved toward anyone else.

“Delaney.”

Her grip finally released.

She stood beside me.

Still glaring at Keaton.

Sabine remained on my other side, stunned.

Keaton stayed low beside the overturned chair, trying to catch his breath.

Nobody spoke.

And then Delaney said something much quieter than anything she had shouted.

“He filed again this morning.”

Keaton’s face changed.

Sabine looked at him.

I looked at my brother.

“What did you file?”

He didn’t answer.

That silence told me Delaney’s punch was only the ugliest visible second of a much larger family disaster.

May you like

And suddenly the wedding wasn’t the scandal.

Whatever Keaton had been doing to his ex-wife was.
