Chapter 11 - Elena Was the One Who Saw the Final Piece

I thought the case was already clear enough.
Then Elena found the detail that transformed everything.
She was going through the bag I had carried home from the reception when she pulled out the blackened edge of Luca’s blanket. Something had been tucked into the folded corner that burned last.
A tiny silver clip.
Too small to matter—unless you recognized it.
Elena did.
“It’s from the ceremonial ribbon tags,” she said. “The ones your mother ordered tied to family seating gifts.”
At first I didn’t understand.
Then she explained: each reserved seat on the terrace had been marked with decorative family ribbons and small silver clips. One of those clips had been attached to a card placed on the chair beside the fire pit—the chair my mother had insisted Elena use.
The same chair where she expected Elena to sit with Luca before the confrontation.
A position beside open flame.
A perfect stage.
That meant my mother hadn’t only approved the setting.
She had arranged it.
The fire pit was not random.
The confrontation spot was chosen.
Elena sat down slowly, staring at the clip in her hand.
“She put us there on purpose.”
I looked at my son sleeping in the monitor feed from the nursery upstairs, one fist tucked under his cheek.
Then I understood the full horror.
My mother had designed an environment where intimidation could happen under the cover of celebration.
She believed she controlled every variable.
Except one:
May you like
me arriving early.
