Chapter 5 - THE LODGE IN THE SNOW

Kyle pressed the broken glass against Margaret’s coat.
Sarah stopped moving.
Daniel placed the envelope on a table.
“Let her go.”
Kyle laughed.
“You still think you are in control.”
“No,” Daniel said. “I think you are scared.”
Vanessa’s eyes shifted toward him.
Daniel continued.
“You forged a deed. Kidnapped an elderly woman. Assaulted my wife on camera. Brought us to a second location. None of that is confidence.”
Kyle tightened his grip.
Margaret winced.
Sarah forced herself to breathe.
“What do you want?”
“The original notarized deed.”
“You tore it up.”
“That was a copy.”
“You knew.”
“I knew she always kept two.”
Margaret looked at him.
“You watched me for years.”
“I learned from you.”
The words hurt her.
Sarah saw it.
Kyle blamed Margaret for the lie of his childhood.
He also wanted everything she owned.
Both truths existed.
Vanessa reached for the envelope.
Daniel pulled it back.
“Margaret first.”
Kyle nodded toward the staircase.
Vanessa led Margaret forward.
Sarah moved slowly.
Then the lights went out.
The room dropped into darkness.
A struggle erupted.
Margaret screamed.
Glass broke.
Daniel tackled someone.
Sarah felt a hand grab her coat.
She drove her elbow backward.
Vanessa cursed.
Outside, police lights flashed through the windows.
Mara’s voice came through a loudspeaker.
“Drop the weapon!”
Emergency lights flickered on.
Kyle stood near the fireplace.
The glass shard was gone.
Blood ran from his hand.
Margaret was on the floor.
Daniel shielded her.
Vanessa held the envelope.
She ripped it open.
Inside was blank paper.
Daniel looked at her.
“You thought I brought evidence to a kidnapping?”
Mara and officers entered.
Kyle moved toward the rear door.
Sarah blocked him.
He stopped inches away.
“Move.”
“No.”
“You always wanted to beat me.”
“I wanted a brother.”
The sentence struck harder than the slap.
For one second, Kyle looked eight years old.
Then the expression vanished.
He shoved her.
Daniel caught Sarah.
Officers restrained Kyle.
Vanessa attempted to burn the blank papers in the fireplace.
Mara pulled her away.
Margaret was taken by ambulance.
At the hospital, she suffered another cardiac episode.
Doctors stabilized her.
Kyle and Vanessa were charged with kidnapping, assault, fraud, and conspiracy.
But both made bail within forty-eight hours because the defense claimed Margaret voluntarily went to the lodge.
They produced a video.
Margaret appeared on screen entering the car willingly.
The clip ended before any force.
Kyle’s attorney argued family conflict, not kidnapping.
Mara needed more.
Then the lodge fireplace was searched.
Inside the chimney, investigators found a metal capsule.
Henry had hidden documents there years earlier.
One was a letter to Sarah.
Another was an audio cassette.
The letter read:
Sarah,
If you are reading this, I failed to correct what I allowed.
Kyle is Thomas’s son, but I raised him as mine. That is not the mistake.
The mistake was letting him believe love depended on inheritance.
Margaret wanted secrecy. I agreed.
Vanessa knows the truth about the balcony.
Do not trust Leonard Price.
And do not assume I was innocent.
Sarah stopped reading.
The final line was underlined.
I pushed Thomas.
Her hands went cold.
Her father had killed Kyle’s biological father.
The construction accident was not an accident.
Henry confessed that Thomas discovered financial fraud and threatened exposure.
During an argument at a building site, Henry shoved him.
Thomas fell.
Henry covered it up.
Then he raised Thomas’s infant son out of guilt.
Kyle had grown up inside a family built on murder.
Sarah looked at Margaret.
“Did you know?”
May you like
Margaret closed her eyes.
“Yes.”
