Chapter 8 - THE LAST DEED

The hospital entered lockdown.
Kyle’s transport van was found abandoned.
One guard was injured.
Another was missing.
Sarah and Daniel raced back with police.
Margaret’s room was empty.
The window was open.
A rope hung down the side of the building.
Kyle had taken her.
A message waited on Sarah’s phone.
Bring the original deed to Henry’s grave.
Midnight.
No police.
The original notarized deed was in court custody.
But Jonathan revealed another truth.
Henry created a sealed transfer document naming Sarah and Kyle as equal beneficiaries if both acknowledged the truth of their parentage in court.
He wanted confession to become the condition of inheritance.
The document had never activated.
Kyle wanted the deed because it contained the landholding shares.
He also wanted Margaret to sign a final waiver.
Mara planned the operation.
Sarah wore a wire.
Daniel monitored from a van.
Snow began again as she entered the cemetery.
Henry’s grave stood beneath old cedar trees.
Kyle waited beside it.
Margaret sat in a wheelchair, wrists tied.
Kyle held a gun.
“You brought it?” he asked.
Sarah raised an envelope.
“Let her go.”
“You always say that.”
“What?”
“Let her go. Let the company go. Let the past go. Easy for the person who inherited everything.”
“I inherited a crime scene.”
“You inherited his name.”
“So did you.”
“No. I inherited his guilt.”
Margaret began crying.
“Kyle.”
He turned on her.
“Do not call me that like you gave it with love.”
“I loved you.”
“You lied to me every day.”
“I was afraid.”
He laughed.
“Sarah says that is not enough.”
Sarah stepped closer.
“She is right.”
Margaret looked at both of them.
“I failed you.”
Kyle’s gun lowered slightly.
Then headlights appeared behind the trees.
Vanessa stepped out of a car.
Kyle stared.
“You came back.”
“I came for the recording.”
Sarah realized.
Vanessa had not fully chosen truth.
She wanted leverage too.
Kyle pointed the gun at her.
“You set me up.”
“You left Henry hanging.”
“You watched.”
“Yes.”
Margaret whispered, “Stop.”
No one listened.
Vanessa held up the flash drive.
“The full audio clears me of ordering the push.”
“It proves you covered it up.”
“It proves you did it.”
Kyle’s face broke.
He lunged toward her.
Sarah moved to Margaret.
Daniel and officers closed in.
A gunshot cracked.
Vanessa fell.
Kyle froze.
Blood spread across her shoulder.
He stared at the weapon as if someone else fired it.
Daniel tackled him.
Mara secured the gun.
Sarah cut Margaret’s restraints.
Vanessa remained conscious.
She looked at Sarah.
“The drive.”
Sarah found it in the snow.
Then Vanessa whispered, “There is another file.”
“What file?”
“The hospital surgery.”
Margaret’s eyes widened.
Vanessa continued.
“Kyle paid Price to make sure she did not survive.”
Kyle shouted from the ground.
“She is lying!”
Vanessa laughed weakly.
“Play folder seven.”
At the hospital, forensic analysts opened the drive.
Folder seven contained a recording of Kyle and Price.
Kyle said, “If the surgery goes wrong, no one questions the deed.”
Price replied, “And if she survives?”
“Then we make her look incompetent.”
Margaret listened from her bed.
Her son had planned for both outcomes.
Death or erasure.
She turned her face toward the wall.
Sarah sat beside her.
For the first time, Margaret did not defend him.
The full balcony recording also played.
Henry confessed killing Thomas.
Kyle confronted him.
Henry grabbed Kyle.
They fought.
The railing broke.
Henry hung over the edge.
He begged.
Kyle stood above him.
Vanessa said, “Push him to confess.”
Kyle answered, “He already did.”
May you like
Then he stepped on Henry’s hand.
Henry fell.
