Chapter 13 - The Man in Leonard’s Coffin Finally Got His Own Name Back

Elias Grant had a sister named Denise.

She was fifty-one.

Worked at a grocery distribution center in Redding.

When authorities told her Elias had nearly been buried under another man’s name, she drove south.

I asked Detective Ellis:

“Would it be inappropriate for me to contact her?”

“Yes, initially.”

Good.

I waited.

Months later, Denise sent:

me

a letter.

She had heard from investigators that I was the person who challenged:

the body.

Her letter said:

Thank you for noticing he wasn’t yours. It meant we got ours back.

That sentence destroyed:

me.

Elias had struggled for years.

Alcohol.

Temporary jobs.

Short jail stays.

Periods where nobody knew where he was.

Denise loved:

him.

Also set:

boundaries.

She had not seen him in eight months.

He was still:

her brother.

No life becomes less entitled to its own name because it became:

messy.

Elias received a proper burial in:

Redding.

Small.

Denise.

Two cousins.

A former coworker.

No confusion about:

who.

I sent flowers anonymously.

Then changed my mind and put:

From Clara Bennett

on the card.

No secrets.

May you like

Not anymore.
