Chapter 5 - I Started Treating Veronica Like a Threat Before I Had Proof She Was One

A year after they married, Leonard asked me to resign as trustee.
I said:
“No.”
Why?
The trust was functioning.
No mismanagement.
No legal requirement.
I told myself:
Peter chose me.
Also true:
I did not trust Veronica.
Why?
Some reasons were:
real.
She encouraged Leonard to use more trust distributions.
She once asked whether the trust would someday help fund:
a second home.
She referred to Peter’s money as:
“family capital.”
That bothered me.
But there was no evidence she was:
stealing.
No fraud.
No hidden debt I knew about.
I took:
preference
and made it:
risk profile.
Then did something worse.
I asked the trust attorney whether we could require a postnuptial agreement before approving a large distribution toward:
the house.
He said:
“Potentially, but I would strongly caution against using trustee discretion primarily to influence marital terms.”
That should have stopped:
me.
Instead I asked another lawyer.
Eventually I told Leonard:
“I will approve the full housing distribution if you document the funds as separate property.”
He stared at me.
“You want me to tell my wife the house we live in is partially protected from her if we divorce.”
“I want your father’s money protected.”
“From my wife.”
“Yes.”
There.
No softened language.
Leonard stood.
We were in my kitchen.
Peter’s photograph behind:
him.
He said:
“Do you know what Dad hated most?”
“What?”
“You using fear to make decisions.”
That hurt because Peter had said versions of:
that.
I became defensive.
“I am not handing almost half a million dollars into a marriage I barely understand.”
“It isn’t your marriage to understand.”
“I’m trustee.”
“Then resign.”
“No.”
“Why?”
I could not answer honestly.
The honest answer:
because trusteeship was one of the last places Leonard still had to:
come to me.
After Peter died, my son’s adulthood became more distant.
The trust kept:
a formal connection.
I called it:
responsibility.
Some of it was:
fear of becoming unnecessary.
Leonard left.
The distribution never happened.
He financed the house another way.
Six months later, he changed:
emergency contacts,
estate attorney,
medical proxy.
Veronica became:
first.
I became:
nobody.
Then Leonard stopped taking my calls.
Three years.
That was the background Veronica used at the cemetery when she said:
“You weren’t worth calling when he was alive.”
Cruel.
But not fabricated from nothing.
I had helped build:
May you like
the distance.
