Chapter 4 - THE WEDDING NIGHT TRANSFER

The medical transfer order named a private recovery facility in California.

Reason: acute emotional crisis following wedding disturbance.

The disturbance Hélène created by throwing champagne.

The scene had been planned.

Provoke public chaos.

Record Claire crying.

Use Luca’s family conflict.

Then a physician would recommend rest.

A driver would take her to the facility.

The altered prenup would activate proxy authority.

Luca would control her future Sterling shares.

Or Philippe would control Luca.

Every person had a role.

Even me.

If I intervened, they would label it maternal interference.

Claire sat at the suite table in her wedding dress.

White satin stained where her hand touched spilled champagne from mine.

“I was going to leave with them tonight.”

“What?”

“Hélène offered the family jet to California. She said it would be our honeymoon.”

The recovery facility was near the private airport they planned to use.

No honeymoon.

Transfer.

Luca looked horrified.

“I thought we were going to Nice.”

Philippe told Claire California first for one night due to a business meeting.

Lies nested inside travel plans.

Then Thomas found a medical bag in the Beaumont family vehicle.

Sedatives.

Injection supplies.

A forged prescription in Claire’s name.

Signed by Dr. Cross.

Agent Nolan ordered arrests.

Philippe, Hélène, and Adrian Cole were detained.

Nathan Vale attempted to leave the resort.

Security stopped him at the marina.

He carried a passport under another name.

Julian Beaumont? No, Luca. Keep names. He had the original altered prenup and twenty thousand dollars.

Adrian refused to speak.

Philippe claimed everything was a misunderstanding between international business cultures.

Hélène began crying.

She said she only wanted Claire to rest.

No one used the word kidnapping.

People who plan elegant crimes prefer therapeutic language.

Camille testified from the start.

Her records.

Her forced medication.

Her guardianship.

Her stolen shares.

The Red Clinic suddenly mattered to federal and Belgian authorities.

Then Luca made a decision.

He signed away all proxy rights under the prenup.

He placed his Beaumont shares into court protection.

He requested no access to Claire’s future assets.

Claire watched.

“This doesn’t fix what you hid.”

“I know.”

“Why do it?”

“Because I should not benefit while asking you to believe me.”

That was responsibility.

Not enough.

But real.

Then Philippe asked to speak with me.

We met through glass in a secured interview room.

He smiled as if we were still negotiating.

“You are overreacting.”

“You planned to drug my daughter.”

“I planned to prevent panic.”

“You stole Camille’s shares.”

“She was ill.”

“You imprisoned her.”

“She was unstable.”

“You keep using diagnosis as ownership.”

He leaned closer.

“You do the same with corporate control.”

“No. I hold a board seat.”

“Power is power.”

He wanted moral equivalence.

I did not give it.

“Who inside Sterling promised the acquisition?”

“Adrian.”

“Who approved Claire’s transfer?”

“Hélène.”

“Who created the idea?”

Philippe’s smile changed.

“Your late husband.”

I stopped.

My husband, Edward Doyle, died seven years earlier.

He built Sterling Coastal Holdings with me.

He knew the Beaumont family.

I thought only socially.

Philippe said Edward began acquisition talks twelve years earlier.

He wanted European expansion.

He considered linking families through future marriage.

Claire was eighteen.

Luca was twenty.

Did Edward imagine this?

Arrange introductions?

Create the first bridge?

I wanted to dismiss Philippe.

Then he produced an old letter.

Edward’s signature.

Margaret, Beaumont gives us Europe. Claire and Luca may someday solve what contracts cannot.

My husband had planted the idea.

Not coercion.

Not kidnapping.

But dynastic thinking.

He had treated our daughter’s future as strategy.

The current crime did not begin with him.

But the door may have.

I returned to Claire.

I showed her the letter.

She read it once.

Then tore it in half.

“Dad is dead. I’m not marrying his business plan.”

The sentence freed both of us from defending him.

Then Agent Nolan entered.

Adrian Cole had escaped federal transport.

Someone inside security opened the vehicle.

The resort lockdown tightened.

A camera showed Adrian entering the employee wing.

He carried a key card belonging to Thomas.

Thomas looked stunned.

“I never gave him that.”

Camille whispered, “He’s going to the kitchen.”

Why?

She ran.

We followed security monitors.

Adrian entered the pastry storage room.

Removed a floor panel.

Pulled out a black case.

Camille stared.

“The original Beaumont ledger.”

The memory card in Hélène’s hat was only a copy.

The case contained signatures.

Payments.

Names.

And Adrian now held it.

May you like

He looked into the camera.

Then set the kitchen on fire.
