Chapter 5 - THE FIRE BENEATH THE WEDDING CAKE

Sprinklers activated across the service wing.
Guests evacuated.
Smoke spread behind the ballroom.
Fire crews contained the kitchen before flames reached the dining terrace.
Adrian disappeared through a delivery tunnel.
The black case went with him.
But he made one mistake.
The wedding cake refrigeration camera had a separate backup.
It recorded him opening the case.
Inside were paper ledgers, a hard drive, and a sealed envelope addressed to me.
Why would Philippe keep a letter for me?
Camille knew.
“Edward wrote more than one.”
My husband had investigated Beaumont Maritime after their first acquisition talks.
He discovered irregular trust transfers.
Then withdrew.
Why never tell me?
Camille believed Philippe threatened him with a Sterling secret.
What secret?
The sealed envelope might explain.
Without the case, we had the copied ledger but not the strongest originals.
Agent Nolan traced Adrian’s tunnel exit to the marina.
A boat was missing.
Thomas knew the resort coastline.
If Adrian went north, he could reach a private airstrip.
If south, a customs checkpoint.
The boat’s fuel level limited distance.
We split search teams.
Luca asked to help.
Claire said no.
Then changed her mind.
“You know Adrian?”
“Yes.”
“Then tell them how he thinks.”
He did.
Adrian loved controlled exits.
No improvisation.
He would not risk open water.
He would go to one of the unfinished resort villas where a service road met the coast.
Security reached Villa Nine.
Adrian had barricaded the door.
The black case sat on the terrace.
He held a lighter.
Agent Nolan negotiated.
I watched from the command center.
Adrian said he wanted immunity and ten million dollars.
Otherwise, the originals burned.
Nolan answered, “You already set one fire. Do you want attempted murder added?”
“No one died.”
“Because staff acted faster than you expected.”
He looked at the black case.
Then at the ocean.
“The Beaumonts will blame everything on me.”
“They already are.”
His confidence shifted.
Luca asked to speak through the audio line.
“Adrian, my father never planned to let you survive the acquisition.”
Adrian laughed.
“You think you’re different?”
“No. I think I was useful too.”
Recognition can break alliances.
Adrian opened the case.
He pulled out the sealed envelope.
“Margaret wants this?”
I answered over the speaker.
“I want the truth.”
“Truth is expensive.”
“So is prison.”
He smiled.
Then Philippe’s voice came through another channel.
Someone had patched the detained father into the negotiation.
“Burn it, Adrian.”
Agent Nolan turned.
Who authorized that call?
No one.
Philippe had access to the communications system through a hidden device.
Even in custody, the network reached.
Adrian stared at the speaker.
Philippe said, “You know what happens if she reads Edward’s letter.”
Adrian’s hand shook.
Then he held the envelope over the flame.
Camille shouted from the command room.
“Edward recorded you both!”
Adrian froze.
She was bluffing.
Or maybe not.
She continued.
“The hard drive contains the meetings. Burning paper does nothing.”
Adrian looked into the case.
He did not know which evidence mattered.
That uncertainty saved it.
Agents breached.
He dropped the lighter.
The black case survived.
The envelope did too.
I opened it in Priya’s presence.
Edward’s handwriting covered six pages.
He confessed.
Years ago, Sterling Coastal used a Beaumont subsidiary to hide labor violations during a joint development.
Edward approved the structure.
Philippe expanded it into fraud.
When Edward tried to expose him, Philippe threatened criminal charges against Sterling.
Edward withdrew from Europe.
He planned to tell me.
Then became ill.
He died before doing so.
The letter ended:
Do not let Claire inherit my silence as obligation. If Luca becomes part of her life, judge him by whether he breaks from Philippe, not by whether he carries the Beaumont name.
My husband had been flawed.
Complicit.
Then remorseful.
He did not ask me to preserve his reputation.
He asked me not to turn guilt into Claire’s marriage.
I handed the letter to my daughter.
She cried.
Not because Edward was innocent.
Because he finally told the truth too late.
Then Priya opened the hard drive.
One video showed Hélène and Philippe discussing Claire’s wedding.
Hélène said, “If Luca refuses, Camille signs for him.”
Philippe answered, “Camille will never leave the clinic.”
May you like
But Camille had.
And now she heard exactly how permanent her parents intended the disappearance to be.
