Chapter 11 - The District Could Not Fix the Problem With One Firing

Mrs. Grayson resigned before the district completed termination proceedings.
Some parents were angry.
“She should lose her license.”
Others defended her.
“One mistake after eighteen years?”
The state educator-licensing authority reviewed the incident separately according to:
its process.
I did not control:
the outcome.
The district’s internal response mattered more to me.
Initially administrators wanted:
new staff training.
I said:
“Training is fine.”
“But training was not missing here.”
They stared.
Mrs. Grayson had:
the plan.
Signed:
the plan.
Received:
a warning.
The problem was not lack of:
information.
It was a culture where staff felt free to reinterpret health accommodations as:
behavioral privileges.
So the district changed:
procedures.
Any teacher concern about suspected misuse of rescue medication had to go to:
the nurse
and:
parent.
The medication itself could not be withheld while the concern was investigated.
Repeated conflicts involving health plans triggered:
administrator review.
Nursing notes involving delayed access generated:
automatic parent notification.
Those changes were:
boring.
Good.

Safety usually is.
