Chapter 14 - Rebecca Taught Lily Something Better Than “Adults Know Best”
By third grade, Rebecca and Lily had developed:
a ritual.
Every semester Rebecca reviewed Lily’s asthma plan directly with:
her.
Not only adults.
“Where’s your inhaler?”
“Backpack.”
“If someone tells you not to use it?”
“I tell them my plan says I can.”
“If they still say no?”
“I go to you.”
“What if you can’t get to me?”
“Tell another adult.”
“What if the adult says you’re being dramatic?”
Lily smiled.
“Be dramatic.”
Rebecca laughed.
Exactly.
We modified the phrase later.
More appropriately:
Keep asking until someone listens.
That became useful beyond:
asthma.
Not every adult is:
right.
Not every child is:
right.
But children should know they are allowed to repeat:
something is wrong
without feeling naughty for making adults uncomfortable.
