Chapter 1 - The Cake Against The Wall

Warm afternoon light poured through the tall garden windows of the Cape Cod estate’s glass breakfast conservatory, turning the cream walls and pale oak floors almost golden. The long dining table was already set for Noah’s private family birthday. He stood near it in a black tuxedo, holding the same white birthday cake carefully in both hands, proud and a little nervous the way six-year-olds get when everyone is finally looking at them.
Then everything exploded at once.
Emma ran straight at him.
“NOAH, DON’T EAT THAT!” she screamed.
Only after the words left her mouth did she swing hard at the side of the cake. Her blow knocked it completely out of Noah’s hands. The cake flew several feet and smashed directly into the nearby wall, bursting apart in a spray of white frosting and crushed sponge that slid down the cream paint and splattered across the floor.
Noah recoiled backward in shock.
Grace rushed in immediately and grabbed Emma by both shoulders, trying to steady her, just as Daniel came through the double doors behind her. He took in the scene in one horrified glance—his startled son, his crying daughter, and the destroyed birthday cake smeared across the wall.
He strode straight to Emma and dropped to one knee in front of her.
“EMMA! WHY THE HELL DID YOU DO THAT?”
Emma looked toward the smashed cake through tears and pointed with a trembling hand. “I SAW SOMEONE PUT PEANUT OIL IN IT!”
Daniel froze.
Noah had eaten none of it. He stood several feet away, confused and frightened, while Dr. Ryan moved quickly to the splattered cake, pulled on gloves, and gathered a frosting sample from one of the cleaner fallen pieces. The room went so silent that the scrape of the plate against the floor sounded unnaturally loud.
After one sharp look at the sample, Ryan’s face changed.
“She’s right,” he said urgently. “There’s peanut oil in this.”
Daniel’s expression shifted from anger to something much worse.
He rose at once, pulled Emma securely against one side of his body, and motioned Noah close with the other arm. Then he turned toward the far doorway, protecting both children in front of him.
“WHO THE HELL TRIED TO FEED THIS TO MY SON?!”
Emma stared fearfully toward the same doorway.
Ryan stayed crouched beside the ruined cake.
And in that terrible suspended second, before anyone answered, Daniel knew only one thing for certain:
his daughter had not ruined a birthday.
May you like
She had stopped something.
