Chapter 2 - The Name Emma Finally Said

For a moment no one moved.

Noah’s face had gone pale under the soft conservatory light. He was still too young to fully grasp the medical difference between “unsafe” and “deadly,” but he knew what peanut oil meant. He had lived his whole life with adults checking labels, reading menus twice, carrying EpiPens, and teaching him never to eat anything unless someone safe handed it to him.

Daniel crouched lower so he could look Emma in the eye.

“Tell me who you saw.”

Emma’s breathing shook. Grace kept one hand on her shoulder, as if she knew the answer already mattered just as much as the ruined cake. Ryan rose slowly, sample plate in hand.

Emma swallowed hard. “Vanessa.”

Daniel stared at her.

His wife had not been in the conservatory when he walked in. She had supposedly stepped out to take a call from the bakery about the candles and plates. Daniel turned toward the open service doorway just as Vanessa Carter appeared there in a fitted ivory dress, her expression already sharpening with irritation at the noise.

“What happened?” she demanded.

Daniel did not answer the question.

He stood and positioned himself more clearly between Vanessa and the children. “Emma says she saw you put peanut oil in Noah’s cake.”

Vanessa laughed once, too quickly. “That’s insane.”

Ryan stepped in before Daniel’s temper got ahead of him. “It’s not insane. There is peanut oil in the frosting. I just confirmed it.”

Vanessa’s face changed—not into guilt yet, but into defensive disbelief.

“I didn’t poison anyone,” she said. “I barely touched the cake.”

Noah had started crying now, quietly and helplessly, the adrenaline finally reaching him. Grace took him by the hand and moved him closer to Daniel and Emma. Daniel’s mind was working too fast for clean thought. Anger, fear, relief, confusion—they all collided at once.

“What do you mean,” he said very evenly, “you barely touched the cake?”

Vanessa’s eyes flicked toward Ryan’s sample plate.

That tiny glance was enough to make Daniel’s stomach turn.
