Chapter 7 - Why Margaret Needed Lily Gone
I didn’t learn Margaret’s motive all at once.
That truth came in pieces.
The first piece came from a bank statement I found two days later in Vanessa’s home office drawer, folded beneath cosmetics and unopened invitations.
Several large payments had been made toward debts in Margaret’s name.
The second piece came from Vanessa’s laptop.
She had left it open when she rushed after me after the lunch disaster, and what she forgot to close told me almost everything.
There were saved listings for condos in Scottsdale.
A folder labeled Post-Wedding.
And a spreadsheet projecting “household liquidity” based on my assets, life insurance, and the investment trust my late father had established for Lily after her mother died.
Vanessa had not been counting on becoming a wife.
She had been counting on becoming a gatekeeper.
Lily was the complication.
My daughter’s trust was protected until she turned twenty-five, but any change in daily custodial control could have given Vanessa influence over the accounts attached to Lily’s care, education, and residence.
Margaret, already drowning in debt and furious at a life she believed had given her less than she deserved, had decided Lily was not a child.
She was an obstacle.
