Chapter 8 - The Lunch Was Never Meant to Be a Family Meal

Once I understood the petition, the lunch scene changed in my mind.
It had not been a normal family lunch.
It had been staging.
Vanessa had insisted on inviting a few distant relatives she barely cared about.
She said it would be good for “family harmony.”
Margaret specifically suggested Lily sit at the table instead of eating earlier in the kitchen.
Why?
Because they were creating a performance.
If Lily cried, threw food, panicked, or resisted, they would have witnesses.
People who could later say, “Yes, Lily was difficult.”
“Yes, Daniel looked overwhelmed.”
“Yes, Vanessa was doing her best.”
And if I hadn’t come home early—if I had only heard about a “bad lunch” later—Vanessa could have cried, Margaret could have shaken her head sadly, and everyone would have told me how hard Vanessa was trying.
Instead, I came home and saw the truth in its ugliest form.
Vanessa didn’t know I had the camera footage already.
She thought she was still performing.
That was why she said, “Cry. No one’s coming to save you.”
She thought nobody would see past the scene she was building.

The moment I walked in, that entire plan collapsed.
