Chapter 4 - THE ROOM BEHIND THE WALL

The west wing had been locked since I was a child.
My father said the floor was structurally unsafe.
Linda said mold destroyed the rooms.
Vanessa once told me a worker died there.
Every story was different.
Detective Reed obtained a second warrant based on Elaine’s statement.
Police entered through a sealed corridor behind the grand staircase.
The west wing was not damaged.
It had been preserved.
Dust covered the floor, but the furniture remained.
At the end of the hallway stood a pale yellow room.
A wooden crib.
A rocking chair.
Clouds painted across the ceiling.
My name appeared above the crib.
AMBER.
Inside the closet, investigators found boxes.
Birth records.
Medical charts.
Photographs.
Legal correspondence.
Priya opened the first file.
The birth certificate listed Linda and Robert Hayes as my parents.
The second file contained another certificate.
Child: Amber Grace Mercer.
Mother: Elaine Mercer.
Father: Unknown.
I sat down on the floor.
Elaine was my biological mother.
Kyle was my half-brother.
The woman who risked her life to bring me the ledger had also spent twenty-eight years watching another family call me theirs.
Priya found a private adoption agreement.
Elaine signed it while hospitalized after childbirth.
The document claimed she voluntarily surrendered me.
But a handwritten letter attached to the file said otherwise.
I did not consent. Robert threatened to have me arrested for theft if I refused. Linda said my baby would be safer with them.
Elaine had discovered early fraud at Hayes Development.
Robert used the accusation to control her.
He took her child.
Then kept her employed.
I felt sick.
“Why would she stay?”
Priya answered softly.
“To remain near you.”
Photographs proved it.
Elaine stood in the background at company picnics.
Christmas parties.
My high-school graduation.
A woman I barely noticed.
Always watching.
The room also contained original fraud documents.
Robert had preserved them as leverage against Linda, Vanessa, and Carol.
Everyone had evidence against everyone else.
That was why no one left.
Priya found a sealed envelope addressed to me.
My father’s handwriting covered the front.
TO AMBER IF ELAINE TALKS.
Inside was a letter.
Not an apology.
A warning.
Elaine is unstable. She will claim you were stolen. Remember who raised you.
I laughed bitterly.
Even his confession tried to control my response.
Then Detective Reed found an audio recorder inside the crib.
The battery was dead.
Forensics recovered the final file.
Linda and Robert were arguing.
The date was six months earlier.
Linda said, “If Amber learns Elaine is her mother, she owns part of the company.”
Robert replied, “Only if Elaine proves the original shares.”
“What original shares?”
“The Mercer shares.”
Elaine’s father had co-founded Hayes Development.
When he died, his ownership passed to Elaine.
Robert forged a sale and took control.
If the adoption fraud became public, I could inherit Elaine’s claim.
The fake rent invoice had two purposes.
Cover the stolen money.
And force me into a debt settlement waiving rights against the family.
I was not merely a convenient name.
I was a legal threat.
Then a police officer entered the room.
“We found another door.”
Behind the nursery wall was a narrow office.
Inside sat a laptop still connected to power.
The screen showed a live camera feed.
Priya’s law office.
My apartment.
Elaine’s hospital room.
Someone was watching all three.
A chat window opened.
