Chapter 5 - THE BROTHER WHO CAME FOR THE DRIVE

Kyle called from Elaine’s phone.

Detective Reed traced the signal.

It bounced through three towers.

He wanted the flash drive and original share certificates.

In exchange, he promised not to harm Elaine.

But Elaine was inside a guarded hospital.

Reed checked immediately.

Her room was empty.

A nurse had moved her for imaging.

The transport order was fake.

Kyle had taken her.

Security footage showed him wearing hospital scrubs, pushing Elaine through a service exit.

My half-brother kidnapped our mother to protect the family that stole me from her.

The contradiction felt unbearable.

Priya asked what Kyle knew about the adoption.

The nursery files answered.

Kyle was seven when I was born.

Elaine had been raising him alone.

After Robert took me, he threatened to place Kyle in foster care if Elaine challenged the adoption.

Kyle grew up believing my existence destroyed his family.

Vanessa found him years later.

She gave him money.

Work.

A target.

Me.

The phone rang again.

Kyle told me to come to an abandoned Hayes project outside Salem.

No police.

No lawyer.

Bring the drive.

Priya said, “You’re not going alone.”

“I know.”

Detective Reed fitted me with a wire.

A tactical team surrounded the project.

The building was a half-finished luxury hotel.

Concrete floors.

Plastic sheets.

No heat.

I entered carrying a decoy drive.

Kyle stood on the third level.

Elaine sat tied to a chair.

Her face was bruised.

“Amber,” she whispered.

Kyle held a gun.

He looked like her around the eyes.

“You got the files?”

“Yes.”

“Put them down.”

I placed the envelope on the floor.

“Let her go.”

He laughed.

“You sound like them.”

“Like who?”

“The people who always get to make demands.”

Elaine said, “Kyle, please.”

He turned on her.

“You chose her.”

“I tried to save both of you.”

“You stayed in their house for her.”

“I stayed because Robert would have taken you too.”

“You let me grow up thinking she replaced me.”

Elaine started crying.

“I was afraid.”

Kyle’s hand shook.

I stepped closer.

“You think hurting me gives you back what they stole?”

“You got the mansion.”

“I got a lie.”

“You got parents.”

“I got criminals.”

“You got a name.”

“They used it to steal millions.”

He looked at me.

For the first time, anger weakened.

I continued.

“Vanessa didn’t rescue you. She hired you.”

His jaw tightened.

“She told me the truth.”

“She told you the version that made you useful.”

I showed him a printed ledger page.

Payments from Vanessa’s company to Kyle.

Each labeled security consulting.

One payment appeared two days after Elaine was hit.

Kyle looked at Vanessa’s signature.

“That’s fake.”

“No.”

Elaine said, “She ordered it.”

Kyle turned.

“You said you didn’t know who hit you.”

“I was protecting you.”

His face broke.

Then a sound came from the stairwell.

Vanessa stepped into view.

She held a second gun.

“I told you not to talk to her,” she said.

Kyle stared.

“You followed me.”

“I manage risk.”

She pointed the gun at Elaine.

“Give me the drive, Amber.”

I looked at Kyle.

He finally saw it.

He was not family to Vanessa.

He was evidence that could speak.

He moved between the gun and Elaine.

Vanessa fired.

The shot struck Kyle’s shoulder.

Police rushed in.

Vanessa ran.

Kyle fell beside Elaine.

I dropped to my knees and pressed my hands against the wound.

He looked at me in shock.

“Why are you helping me?”

“Because you’re bleeding.”

“You should hate me.”

“I might.”

Then his hand grabbed my wrist.

“Vanessa has the original share certificates.”

“Where?”

“In the mansion.”

“Police searched it.”

“Not the staircase.”

May you like

He coughed.

“The chandelier opens the vault.”
