Chapter 11 - Richard Apologized Without Asking Emily to Admire Him
Richard did not apologize quickly.
It took:
six weeks,
two canceled family dinners,
one counseling session with Susan,
and a private conversation with Daniel.
Then he asked Emily to meet at a small restaurant in Powell.
No mansion.
No dining table.
No Vanessa.
No Susan.
Aaron offered to come.
Emily said:
“No.”
This conversation belonged:
father and daughter.
Richard arrived early.
No expensive jacket.
No performance.
He looked tired.
They ordered coffee.
Then he said:
“I was cruel to your husband.”
Emily waited.
“I was cruel to you.”
She still waited.
“And I said something unforgivable about Noah’s blood.”
Emily’s eyes hardened.
Richard immediately corrected:
“Not unforgivable.”
Then:
“Something I have no right to ask you to forget.”
Better.
He continued.
“I have confused income with character.”
Emily looked at him.
That sentence cost him.
She knew.
Richard explained:
Aaron frightened him.
Not because:
poor.
Because Aaron could have joined Hartline.
Could have doubled income.
Could have pursued management.
Chose not to.
Richard interpreted:

lack of hunger.
Richard had built his identity around:

Aaron’s contentment felt:
almost insulting.
Emily asked:
“Why?”
Richard stared into his coffee.
“Because if someone can be happy without chasing more, maybe I gave up things I didn’t have to.”

vacations,
school events.
Built wealth.
He needed:

cost.
Aaron’s life suggested:
another definition of success.
That threatened:
Richard’s past.
Emily’s modest career choice did too.
Richard said:
“When Vanessa built her firm, I understood it.”
“When you left Hartline for literacy work, I thought you were wasting everything I gave you.”
Emily’s eyes filled.
“It wasn’t yours to use.”
“I know.”
“Not my education.”
“Not my talent.”
“Not my life.”
“I know.”
Then Richard said:
“I also used money because it was easier than admitting I preferred Vanessa’s choices.”
That hurt.
Honest.
Emily asked:
“Do you prefer her?”
Richard thought carefully.
“I understand her more easily.”
Not the same.
Important.
Then:
“I think I rewarded that.”
“Yes.”
“I made you feel lesser.”
“Yes.”
“I am sorry.”
No:
but.
No:
you were sensitive.
No:
I meant well.
Emily let silence sit.
Then she said:
“I used the key to scare you.”
Richard almost smiled.
“It worked.”
“I didn’t know what was in the drawer.”
He looked surprised.
“Really?”
“No.”
“You dramatic little—”
He stopped.
Emily laughed despite herself.
Then:
“I wanted proof that you were a hypocrite.”
“Found some.”
“Yes.”
Richard smiled sadly.
“So did I.”
They did not hug immediately.
They finished coffee.
Talked about:
Noah’s school,
Aaron’s new student-support program,
Susan’s plans.
When they finally stood, Richard asked:
“Will you bring Aaron next time?”
Emily looked at him.
“If Aaron wants to come.”
Richard nodded.
