Chapter 14 - Daniel Took the Brass Key Back

The following spring, Daniel returned to Ohio again.
This time for:
Noah’s sixth birthday.
He gave Noah:
a telescope.
Richard complained it was too expensive.
Daniel answered:
“You don’t control my ledger.”
That line nearly killed Susan with laughter.
After the party, Emily took the brass key from her purse.
She still carried it.
Not on her main keyring.
Inside:
a small zip pocket.
She handed it to Daniel.
He looked at it.
“What am I supposed to do with this?”
“I don’t want it.”
“Why?”
“The drawer doesn’t need to be secret anymore.”
After the family reckoning, Susan and Richard had scanned:
relevant records.
Daniel’s old working files went to:
secure storage.
Tax records retained according to accountant advice.
Unnecessary duplicates:
shredded.
The antique sideboard still sat in the dining room.
The center drawer still locked.
Now it held:
old photographs,
Richard’s father’s pocket watch,
Susan’s mother’s recipe cards.
No financial weapon.
Daniel turned the key in his fingers.
“I can give it to Noah.”
Emily laughed.
“No.”
“When he’s eighteen?”
“No.”
“Twenty-one?”
“Daniel.”
He smiled.
Then he placed the key on the kitchen counter.
“Keep it with the furniture.”
That was where it belonged.
Not:
Emily’s purse.
Not:
insurance.
Not:
proof.
A key to:
a drawer.
Later that evening Richard found it.
He looked at Emily.
“Is this the famous instrument of my humiliation?”
Emily smiled.
“You did most of the work yourself.”
Fair.
Richard walked to the sideboard.
Unlocked the drawer.
Placed the key inside.
Then left the drawer:
unlocked.
Emily noticed.
Said nothing.
Some symbols become ridiculous once everyone understands them.
May you like
That was healthy.
