Chapter 7 - Daniel Had Been Secretly Paying Richard Long Before the Refinance Proposal
Three weeks after the boat incident, my accountant noticed something.
Daniel and I were separated by then.
Not legally divorced.
Living apart.
We began reviewing:
joint accounts,
automatic transfers,
credit cards.
There were regular payments from Daniel’s individual checking account to:
Mercer Marine Service.
Amounts varied:

$3,500.
$5,000.
Total over eighteen months:
approximately $68,000.
Daniel’s money.
His right.
Except during the same period, he had told me:
commissions were weak.
I covered:
larger share of mortgage,
health insurance,
several household repairs,
most lake-house property taxes.
He had not merely helped:
Richard.
He shifted other family costs toward:

without telling me why.
When I confronted him, Daniel became defensive.
“It was my money.”
“Yes.”
“Then why are we talking?”
“Because you told me you couldn’t contribute equally at home.”
“I couldn’t.”
“Because you were sending Dad money.”
“He needed it.”
“That is the definition of information relevant to our marriage.”
Daniel stared.
Then:
“He was trying to keep the shop alive.”
“How much does it need?”
“I don’t know.”
“How much has he put in?”
“I don’t know.”
“How much debt?”
Silence.
That was the problem.
Daniel was not investing.
He was:
plugging holes.
Then asking me to refinance:
property
to make the holes disappear.
I asked:
“Did Dad ask you to keep the payments from me?”
“No.”
“Did you?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because you’d say no.”
