Chapter 5 - CAROLINE'S HIDDEN LEGACY

The legal aftermath lasted eighteen months.

Charles fought everything.

He claimed Charlotte staged a public scene.

The video showed him grabbing, shoving, and humiliating her.

He claimed Ethan manipulated Charlotte for access to Bennett assets.

The marriage records, timeline, and Ethan’s independent ownership of the distressed note made that story weak and embarrassing.

He claimed Caroline’s trust had been fully administered.

Dana produced records showing irregular transfers, missing disclosures, and assets pledged in ways the trust terms prohibited.

He claimed the rose fountain crest belonged to Bennett family branding.

Charlotte produced Caroline’s sketchbook, recovered from storage by Mrs. Vega, with a note written in Caroline’s hand:

For Charlotte’s garden someday.

That note broke Charlotte more than the financial documents.

She sat in Dana’s office holding it, Ethan beside her.

For Charlotte’s garden someday.

Her mother had imagined a someday.

Charles had tried to spend it.

Ethan touched her shoulder.

She leaned into him, not because she was weak, but because grief needs a witness.
