Chapter 6 - SISTERS ON NEW GROUND

The mansion’s history became central.

Caroline’s maternal family had owned it before debts, transfers, and Charles’s manipulations blurred control. He had used Caroline’s memory to host Isabella’s wedding on land connected to Charlotte’s protected trust, hoping the public event would help pressure lenders, charm investors, and reinforce his claim to family legitimacy.

In other words, the wedding was not only a wedding.

It was a performance for money.

A stage.

And Charlotte had walked onto it in red.

The court eventually found Charles had breached fiduciary duties, misrepresented trust assets, and wrongfully diverted value from Charlotte’s inheritance. Civil penalties, restitution, loss of control over certain Bennett entities, and eventual criminal referral for related fraud followed.

He did not go to prison immediately.

Real consequences moved slower than rage.

But he lost the thing he loved most.

Control of the story.

Society circles stopped inviting him first.

Then banks stopped extending courtesy.

Then partners demanded independent audits.

Then Isabella gave a deposition.

That was the final fracture.

She sat in a conference room wearing a plain navy dress, no bridal silk, no diamonds.

Dana asked, “Did your father ever tell you Charlotte was excluded from the wedding because she posed a risk?”

“Yes.”

“What risk?”

Isabella closed her eyes.

“He said she would make claims about Mom’s assets.”

“Did he say those claims were false?”

“Yes.”

“Did you believe him?”

A long pause.

“I wanted to.”

“Why?”

Isabella’s voice broke.

“Because if Charlotte was telling the truth, then I had been rewarded for helping him erase her.”

Charlotte sat across the room.

She did not comfort Isabella.

Not then.

The truth deserved space before forgiveness tried to decorate it.

Preston Vale disappeared from Isabella’s life faster than wedding flowers wilt.

He sent one email saying he needed time to “evaluate reputational exposure.”

Isabella replied:

Please do.

Then blocked him.

Charlotte laughed when she heard.

May you like

Not kindly.

But with sisterly approval.
