Chapter 7 - MADISON’S VIDEO

Madison agreed to testify in exchange for reduced charges related to the vehicle loan and forged documents.
Victoria hated the arrangement at first.
Madison had participated.
She mocked her.
Filmed her.
Signed papers.
Benefited from stolen money.
Lena reminded her that accountability did not require identical punishment.
Madison was twenty-two when the kitchen assault occurred.
Old enough to know cruelty.
Young enough to have spent her entire life learning it as normal.
The prosecution needed her video.
Madison needed to tell the truth.
They met once before trial.
Madison looked smaller without makeup and a phone in her hand.
“I am sorry,” she said.
Victoria remained standing.
“For filming?”
“For laughing.”
“Why did you?”
Madison swallowed.
“Because if they were focused on you, they were not focused on me.”
Victoria stared.
The sentence sounded familiar.
Catherine chose survival.
Madison chose invisibility.
Both made Victoria pay.
“You could have stopped recording.”
“I know.”
“You posted clips before.”
“I know.”
“You signed my name.”
“I know.”
Victoria’s voice hardened.
“Stop saying you know as if knowledge is repair.”
Madison began crying.
“What do you want me to say?”
“The truth.”
“I hated you.”
Victoria had not expected that.
Madison continued.
“You had a job. You left the house every day. People respected you. Dad complained about you constantly, but he needed you. I thought if I embarrassed you enough, you would stay small.”
“And now?”
“Now I know he planned for both of us to stay dependent.”
Madison handed her a flash drive.
Every video she had recorded in the house.
Arguments.
Threats.
Richard coaching Catherine before financial meetings.
Martin discussing account transfers.
One clip showed Richard holding Daniel’s old photograph.
He said:
“He should have stayed loyal.”
Another showed Catherine asking:
“What if Victoria discovers the trust?”
Richard answered:
“She will not survive without us long enough to fight.”
Victoria held the drive.
“Why keep these?”
Madison looked ashamed.
“I thought they might become content someday.”
The same vanity that enabled cruelty preserved evidence.
At trial, Madison testified for three days.
Richard’s attorney portrayed her as an attention-seeking influencer.
She admitted it.
He called her dishonest.
She admitted that too.
Then he asked why the jury should believe her now.
Madison looked at Richard.
“Because the videos do not need me to be good.”
The prosecution played the kitchen footage.
Richard slapping Victoria.
Catherine handing him water.
The rag sliding across the floor.
Madison’s own voice mocking from behind the camera.
Victoria watched once.
She did not look away.
The video ended with Richard’s statement about Daniel’s file.
The courtroom remained silent.
Madison left the witness stand crying.
Victoria did not comfort her.
But when Madison passed, Victoria moved her bag so there was space on the bench.
May you like
Madison sat.
For that day, space was enough.
