Chapter 9 - THE VERDICT

The jury deliberated for four days.
Victoria spent those days in a quiet apartment she rented across town.
No family house.
No childhood bedroom.
No kitchen island.
She kept the certified envelope in a folder on her desk.
The paper had started everything.
Not the abuse.
Not the theft.
The end of her participation.
The call came shortly after noon.
Verdict reached.
The courtroom filled.
Richard entered in a dark suit.
He looked older.
Still controlled.
The clerk read the findings.
Financial fraud.
Guilty.
Identity theft.
Guilty.
Insurance fraud.
Guilty.
Conspiracy.
Guilty.
Assault.
Guilty.
Murder in the second degree.
Guilty.
Catherine closed her eyes.
Madison began to cry.
Victoria felt nothing at first.
Then she remembered Daniel holding her in the photograph.
A man erased from her life had finally been named in public as her father.
At sentencing, Richard spoke.
“I gave Victoria everything.”
Victoria looked at him.
He continued.
“A home. Education. Opportunities. She repaid me by destroying this family.”
The judge asked whether Victoria wished to respond.
She stood.
For years, she imagined shouting.
Listing every payment.
Every lie.
Every moment.
Instead she spoke quietly.
“You did not give me a home. You built a prison with my father’s money and charged me to live inside it.”
Richard stared.
Victoria continued.
“You taught me that love was debt. You were wrong.”
She sat.
Richard received a sentence that would keep him in prison for the rest of his natural life.
Martin Voss received twelve years.
Catherine pleaded guilty to fraud and obstruction. Her cooperation and testimony reduced her sentence, but she still served time.
Madison received probation, restitution, and community service.
The family house was sold.
Part of the proceeds repaid lenders and restored Victoria’s stolen funds.
The rest went into a compensation fund for former Hale Home Solutions employees whose retirement accounts Richard had also raided.
Victoria did not keep the kitchen rag.
She did not preserve the broken glass.
She did not need objects from the humiliation.
She kept Daniel’s photograph.
