Chapter 6 - Derek Began Testing How Much Financial Control I Would Accept

It started small.
“Why do you need two credit cards?”
“Rewards.”
“Give me the second one.”
“No.”
Joke.
Then:
“What’s your bank password?”
“No.”
“We’re engaged.”
“I don’t know yours.”
“I’d give it to you.”
“Good for you.”
Another joke.
Then my annual bonus hit.
Derek said:
“Let’s put it toward the wedding.”
I agreed to:
$25,000.
He wanted:
$60,000.
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because I’m not spending sixty thousand dollars of my bonus on a party.”
“Our wedding.”
“A party with legal paperwork attached.”
He laughed.
Then called me:
cheap.
That became another pattern.
When I protected money:
cheap.
When Derek spent:
ambitious.
