Chapter 9 - Canceling a Wedding Was Easier Than Untangling the Life Around It

I called the wedding planner at:
10:48 p.m.
She answered half asleep.
“Emily?”
“The wedding is canceled.”
Silence.
Then:
“Are you safe?”
Excellent question.
“Yes.”
“Do you want me to notify vendors?”
“Yes.”
“Guests?”
“Send a family emergency message tonight.”
“Okay.”
No gossip.
No explanation.
That came later.
Financially, canceling twenty-four hours before the ceremony was:
painful.
Venue:
mostly nonrefundable.
Catering:
partially.
Flowers:
gone.
Band:
gone.
Photography:
partial credit.
Altogether, my share of unrecoverable costs was around:
$48,000.
Derek’s family lost money too.
Linda later said:
“You threw away fifty thousand dollars because of one argument.”
No.
The money was already:
spent.
Getting married to justify sunk wedding costs would have been the most expensive use of:
$48,000
imaginable.
Building management temporarily deactivated Derek’s guest credentials.
Because he had been living in my condo, my attorney cautioned me not to assume:
ownership equals immediate physical removal.
We sought:
appropriate protective relief
and negotiated retrieval of his belongings.
For three nights I stayed with my sister.
Derek remained elsewhere voluntarily after:
police involvement.
Within a week, an interim no-contact arrangement was established.
No dramatic lobby eviction.
Process.
May you like
Good.
