Chapter 10 - I Had Let Rebecca Humiliate Me Because I Wanted to Prove She Couldn’t

This was mine.
Rebecca caused:
her behavior.
I did not.
But I had been participating in the pattern in another:
way.
The first insult?
I laughed.
The second?
Ignored.
The third?
Turned into a sharper:
joke.
Why?
Because I grew up watching people underestimate:
my mother.
Elaine walked into luxury hotels wearing practical shoes and carrying:
binders.
Men in expensive suits assumed she was:
staff.
Then she opened the financials and became the most important person in:
the room.
I admired:
that.
I inherited something less useful from it.
I enjoyed:
underestimation.
When Rebecca looked at my dress and saw:
cheap,
part of me thought:
One day you will feel stupid.
That is not the same as:
setting a boundary.
I allowed her comments to continue because I imagined staying calm made me:
strong.
Meanwhile she escalated.
My job became:
cute.
My apartment:
starter-sized.
My mother’s funeral:
“simple.”
My father’s absence:
“complicated background.”
Then:
gold digger.
Then:
nobody.
Then:
her hands on my clothes.
I did say:
stop
sometimes.
But I kept returning to:
the table.
Because I did not want Rebecca to win by making me:
leave.
That was backwards.
Leaving mistreatment is not:
losing.
There was another reason.
I wanted Daniel’s family to like:
me.
Not desperately.
Enough.
My mother was gone.
My father lived across the country with his second family.
The Brooks family looked:
big,
stable,
connected.
Holiday houses.
Traditions.
Group photos.
I told myself Rebecca was simply the price of admission.
That was ugly to:
admit.
Then Daniel’s silence.
I had seen signs.
Every time Rebecca mentioned “old family business,” Daniel went:
quiet.
I noticed.
Did not:
ask.
Because some part of me feared the answer might connect:
Mom
to:
Daniel.
It did.
So my own rule changed.
No more silence to preserve:
atmosphere.
No more letting wealth turn cruelty into:
etiquette.
No more waiting for the perfect reveal.
Then Rebecca’s financial problem came to:
a head.
The family office requested $600,000 returned immediately, with the rest offset over:
future distributions.
Rebecca said:
“I can’t.”
William asked:
“Can’t or won’t?”
“Can’t.”
She had used nearly all:
of it.
That did not mean Natalie’s estate went:
unpaid.
Brooks Meridian had enough liquidity.
The company paid the valid obligation.
Rebecca’s repayment became a separate:
family matter.
Good.
Debt should not make:
me
responsible for punishing:
her.
Then the internal family-office review found one more action.
Rebecca had moved Elaine’s physical file from the normal archive to:
her private office
two months before Meridian Tower closed.
Inside that box should have been:
seven documents.
Only six remained.
The missing item was a letter from Margaret Brooks to:
Elaine.

And when it finally surfaced in Rebecca’s home office, it revealed why Rebecca’s hatred of my mother had become personal years before I appeared.
