Chapter 3 - Rebecca Needed the Distribution Before Anyone Found Me

The $1 million Rebecca received was not stolen from:

me.

That mattered.

It came from a family distribution pool that she and two other beneficiaries were eligible to:

receive.

The problem was timing.

Brooks Meridian had just sold its most valuable Manhattan property.

Its lawyers had identified an old obligation to:

Elaine Porter.

Before anyone knew exactly what was owed, counsel recommended leaving enough money available to resolve:

the claim.

Rebecca pushed for distributions anyway.

Why?

Her financial records answered:

that.

Rebecca looked:

wealthy

because Rebecca was:

wealthy.

She owned investments.

Had trust income.

A Park Avenue co-op.

But two years earlier she had invested heavily in a luxury wellness company founded by:

a friend.

The company failed.

Rebecca borrowed against liquid investments to keep:

funding it.

Then the market moved against:

her.

By the time Meridian Tower sold, Rebecca had more than:

$640,000

in margin and personal investment debt.

Three days after receiving her $1 million distribution, she paid:

$612,000

toward those obligations.

Suddenly the delay in finding Elaine’s heir had:

value.

Not enough to turn Rebecca into:

a criminal mastermind.

Enough to create a powerful:

conflict.

Then Leah found the first email that changed everything.

From transaction counsel:

Rebecca, the Porter obligation should remain fully reserved until heir confirmation.

Rebecca replied:

There is no confirmed heir.

That statement was sent three days after the report naming:

me.

Her explanation later:

“Identification wasn’t legally verified.”

Technically possible.

Then why had she hired a private investigator specifically to investigate:

Natalie Porter?

The investigator’s report was blunt:

Subject appears unaware of Elaine Porter deferred compensation issue. No contact identified between subject and Brooks Meridian counsel, transactional advisers, or family office. Romantic relationship with Daniel Brooks appears independently established.

Rebecca received that report:

ten weeks

before our engagement.

She had proof I probably did not know.

She still told Daniel:

“Natalie is positioning herself.”

I learned because Daniel eventually showed me:

messages.

Ask yourself why she never mentioned Elaine.

Ask why she became serious with you during the Meridian sale.

People like that don’t believe in coincidences.

People like:

that.

I asked Daniel:

“Why didn’t you tell me she was saying this?”

His face showed:

shame.

“I thought confronting you would make it sound like I believed her.”

“So you said nothing?”

“Yes.”

Wrong.

He knew.

He owned:

that.

Then we found Rebecca’s next move.

She asked family counsel whether an old deferred compensation claim could be considered:

abandoned

if the beneficiary had not asserted it for decades.

Counsel answered:

not without reviewing the specific contract and limitations issues.

Then Rebecca asked:

“What if the original employee knew the company had reorganized and did nothing?”

Again:

maybe relevant.

Then she forwarded a 2008 document.

Subject:

Elaine Porter Settlement

Rebecca summarized:

This appears to show the matter was addressed years ago.

Counsel relied on that description initially.

But when Leah obtained the actual file, she noticed something.

It was not a settlement.

It was a:

draft settlement offer.

Unsigned.

And clipped behind it was Elaine’s written rejection.

Rebecca had possessed:

both.

Yet she had sent counsel only the first page.

That was the first time the issue crossed from aggressive interpretation into something much harder to:

May you like

defend.
