Chapter 6 - THE RECORDING BRITTANY KEPT
Richard’s public campaign began before the court hearing.
He appeared on local television.
He described Evelyn as vulnerable.
Claire as manipulative.
The bank as overreaching.
He said the five-million-dollar check was evidence of elder abuse.
The slap at Christmas became part of his story.
“My mother attacked me during a period of confusion,” he said.
He did not mention grabbing her wrist.
He did not mention the locked study.
He did not mention the transfer request.
Marcus repeated the same message online.
Brittany stayed silent.
Then one night, she arrived at Claire’s apartment.
She wore no makeup.
Her hair was tied back.
In her hand was a phone.
“I recorded him,” she said.
Claire did not invite her in immediately.
“Why?”
“Because I knew he would blame me.”
That answer sounded like a Whitaker answer.
Self-protection first.
Claire stepped aside.
Brittany placed the phone on the kitchen table.
The recording was dated three weeks before Christmas.
Richard’s voice filled the room.
Once Mother is declared incompetent, Claire’s claim disappears. The trust folds back into the family structure. You sign the witness page, Marcus handles the company documents, and I take care of the bank.
Brittany’s recorded voice asked:
What if Claire deposits the check?
Richard answered:
She won’t. She’s too afraid of looking greedy.
Claire felt something cold move through her.
Richard had predicted her.
Not because he understood her.
Because he understood the shame he had trained into her.
Brittany continued the recording.
What if Grandma tells her?
She won’t. Mother thinks secrecy makes her noble.
Claire stopped the audio.
Even Richard understood Evelyn’s flaw.
That made it worse.
“Why didn’t you bring this sooner?” Claire asked.
“Dad said we would all go to prison if the trust opened.”
“Did you sign anything?”
Brittany looked down.
“Yes.”
“What?”
“A witness statement saying Grandma forgot conversations and became confused.”
“Was it true?”
“Sometimes she forgot small things.”
“That is not what I asked.”
“No.”
Marcus arrived later with his own confession.
He had signed documents for RWH Strategic Partners.
He said Richard told him the company was in temporary danger and the trust money belonged to the family.
Claire listened.
Then she called investigators.
Marcus looked stunned.
“You’re turning us in?”
“I’m not hiding evidence.”
“We came to you.”
