Chapter 7 - THE BOARDROOM
The guardianship hearing lasted two days.
Richard’s lawyers presented Dr. Mason’s letter.
Claire’s lawyers presented bank records showing payments from Richard to Mason’s consulting company.
An independent neurologist testified that Evelyn was fully competent.
The judge denied the petition.
Then the trust exercised its voting rights.
Claire entered the Whitaker Holdings boardroom on a gray January morning.
The room had not changed since she worked there.
Dark walnut table.
Mountain photographs.
Thomas Whitaker’s portrait above the fireplace.
Richard sat in his usual chair.
“You have no authority here,” he said.
The trust attorney placed the documents before him.
Claire took the seat across from him.
“I have temporary voting authority.”
“You are a social worker.”
“Financial counselor.”
“You manage rent payments for people who cannot pay their bills.”
“I help them understand systems designed to overwhelm them.”
Richard smiled.
“You think that prepares you for this?”
“No.”
The answer surprised him.
Claire continued.
“That is why the first resolution appoints an independent restructuring team.”
She did not make herself chief executive.
She did not appoint a friend.
She did not repeat the family habit of confusing ownership with competence.
The board voted.
Richard was removed from operational control.
Executive accounts were frozen.
Employee payroll was protected.
All records were surrendered to investigators.
Marcus and Brittany lost their seats.
Richard stood.
“You think you won because a dead man liked you when you were a child?”
Claire looked at Thomas’s portrait.
“No. I think you lost because you believed no one would ever check your work.”
Outside the boardroom, employees had gathered.
Some watched Claire with hope.
Others with suspicion.
She understood both.
The Whitaker name had made promises before.
She did not give a speech.
She released the audit summary.
