Chapter 6 - THE MAN IN THE NURSERY

Marcus reached the nursery first. The crib was empty.
Sarah's scream brought everyone running. The window stood open, curtains moving in the cold air. A side door alarm had been disabled. On the carpet lay Lily's blanket and a black cuff link bearing the Hale hotel crest.
Margaret recognized it.
Only senior executives received those cuff links.
Security footage showed a man in an attorney's overcoat carrying a bundled infant through the service corridor. His face was obscured, but Lydia identified his gait.
Graham Voss, Margaret's longtime general counsel.
Voss had managed Hale family trusts for twenty-three years. He had drafted the documents Patricia used after Michael's funeral. He had also recommended Lieutenant Ward for several hotel security contracts.
Margaret looked physically wounded. "He sat at my table every Christmas."
Voss called from an encrypted number.
"Withdraw the complaint and unfreeze the accounts," he said. "You will receive the child unharmed."
Sarah took the phone. "Let me hear her."
Lily cried in the background.
Sarah's knees nearly failed.
Voss gave them forty minutes. Brooks ordered a trace while pretending to negotiate. The signal moved between towers in lower Manhattan, but Cole believed it was being relayed.
Michael's encrypted files provided the clue. One spreadsheet referenced "Harbor Room 18," a storage facility owned through a Voss shell company.
State police surrounded the location.
Inside, they found no baby. They found servers, forged trust documents, surveillance photographs, and years of records showing Voss had siphoned money from elderly Hale relatives. Patricia and Robert had not created the system. They had joined it.
A live monitor showed Lily in a room with blue tile walls.
Sarah recognized the tiles. They belonged to the abandoned swimming pool at the family's closed Hudson Valley hotel.
Margaret's first property.
They raced north through freezing rain. Voss called again, furious that police had entered Harbor Room 18. He threatened to leave Lily alone in the drained pool building with no heat.
"You won't," Sarah said.
"You don't know me."
"Michael did. That's why he recorded everything. He knew you needed control. You don't want Lily dead. You want Margaret watching you prove you are more powerful than she is."
Voss went silent.
Sarah continued, guided by Cole's hand signals. "So keep talking. Tell her why."
Voss began confessing. Margaret had treated him like staff while trusting him with billions. He had built the legal architecture behind the Hale fortune but owned none of it. He recruited Ward, then Robert, using their greed to create layers of deniability.
The trace locked onto the hotel.
Police entered from three sides.
Sarah and Marcus followed against orders.
They found Voss standing above the empty pool, Lily strapped into a carrier beside him. He held a pistol.
Margaret stepped into the doorway.
"Graham," she said, "give me my great-granddaughter."
Voss smiled. "Ask like I'm your equal."
Margaret lowered herself to her knees.
Everyone froze.
"Please," she said.
Voss glanced down, savoring the moment.
Marcus moved.

The gun fired.
And Sarah saw him fall beside the pool.
