Chapter 8 - THE CALL THAT SENT HIM TO THE BRIDGE
Phone records showed Michael had received a call twelve minutes before the crash from a number registered to Hale Children's Foundation. The line was inside Margaret's corporate headquarters.
Graham Voss denied making the call. Ward denied knowing about it. Robert blamed Patricia.
Patricia claimed the caller was Emma, her own seventeen-year-old daughter.
The accusation divided the family again.
Emma had stayed silent through the arrests, moving between relatives and refusing interviews. When Brooks questioned her, she admitted using the foundation phone but said Voss forced her.
Months earlier, Emma had discovered Robert's secret accounts. She threatened to tell Margaret. Voss showed her evidence that her parents could go to prison and told her Michael intended to expose everything that night. If Emma called Michael and asked him to meet at the bridge, Voss promised no one would be hurt.
"I thought they were going to talk," Emma said through tears. "I didn't know about the brakes."
Sarah believed her because Emma's guilt had no defensiveness in it. She had been manipulated, but her call had placed Michael on the road.
The prosecution prepared four linked cases. Robert faced conspiracy and murder charges. Ward faced obstruction, bribery, and conspiracy. Voss faced the largest case, including kidnapping and attempted murder. Patricia pleaded guilty to fraud and conspiracy in exchange for testimony.
The defense attacked Sarah publicly. They called her unstable, financially desperate, and influenced by Margaret's wealth. One television commentator suggested she had fabricated parts of the story to secure an inheritance.
Sarah nearly withdrew.
Then a box arrived from the evidence unit. Inside was Michael's damaged watch, recovered from the crash and stored without analysis. New technology extracted a final voice memo recorded minutes before impact.
Michael was speaking to someone over the truck's hands-free system.
"Emma, stay where you are," he said. "I'm coming. Do not trust Voss."
Then Michael muttered, "The brake pedal is gone."
A horn blared. Tires screamed.
His final word was Sarah's name.
Sarah listened once and never again.
The recording destroyed the defense theory that Michael had been speeding recklessly. It also proved he knew Voss was using Emma.
At a pretrial hearing, Robert saw Sarah in the corridor.
"You think this ends with prison?" he said. "Margaret's empire was built by people like Voss. There are more secrets."
Marcus stepped between them, his arm still in a sling.
Sarah did not hide.
"Then we'll uncover those too."
The trial began on the first anniversary of Michael's death.
Patricia took the stand against her husband.
