Chapter 10 - Lily Did Not Want To Be “Taken Back”
The adults worried most about one thing.
That I would ask Lily to come home.
I didn’t.
Not because I wasn’t angry.
Because after our first few calls, I understood how insulting that idea would have been.
The Whitmores were her parents.
Peter taught her how to ride a bike.
Caroline sat beside her through two heart procedures when she was small.
They went to soccer games.
Helped with homework.
Fought about curfews.
Made birthday pancakes.
Loved her.
None of that became less real because my parents had once been biologically hers.
Lily told me directly during our third call:
“I want you as my brother. I don’t want everyone acting like I was kidnapped.”
“I know.”
“Do you?”
“I’m trying.”
She smiled.
“Good answer.”
She also did not hate Mom.
That surprised me.
“I think she made a terrible decision when she was sick and scared,” Lily said. “That doesn’t mean I need her to become my mother now.”
Mom heard that eventually.
It devastated her.
Then relieved her.
Because for fifteen years, Rebecca had imagined only two possible futures.
Lily hates me.
Or Lily comes back and destroys the life she already has.
Reality offered something more mature.
