Chapter 14 - The Greenhouse Stopped Being A Memorial

I did not replant the lilies immediately.

For months, the cut stems remained.

Mom offered to clear them.

I said no.

Grandma never entered without permission again.

The black box stayed in my room.

Not as evidence.

As history.

Eventually, spring came.

I stood in the greenhouse staring at the empty bed.

Lily was visiting that weekend.

She came up beside me.

“You know you don’t have to keep growing funeral flowers.”

“They’re not funeral flowers.”

“They literally were.”

I smiled.

“Not anymore.”

Together we replanted.

Not all white.

That was Lily’s idea.

Yellow.

Pink.

Orange.

A few white ones because I insisted tradition deserved at least partial survival.

Mom watched from the doorway.

Grandma did not attend.

Not because she was banned forever.

Because healing did not require forcing everyone into the same room before they were ready.

The memorial plaque remained.

We changed one thing.

The engraved line underneath Lily’s name.

The old one implied death.

The new one read:

**Lily Grace Parker

Born September 5

Loved From The Beginning**

Her adoptive surname was Whitmore legally.

We added that too.

Lily Grace Parker Whitmore.

Both histories.

Neither erased.
