Chapter 4 - THE CUSTODY TRAP

By morning, the storm had weakened, but Emma's situation had become more dangerous. Rebecca Sloan left three voicemails describing Emma's departure as an "unauthorized removal" and warning that Marcus intended to seek emergency custody.

Adrian contacted an attorney named Maya Ortiz, who met them at a twenty-four-hour diner. Maya listened without interrupting, then asked to see Emma's bank records, text messages, and the emergency bag.

"Why the bag?" Emma asked.

"Because preparation can be used against you," Maya said. "Marcus may claim you planned to disappear. We need to show why you believed leaving was necessary."

Emma produced photographs of holes Marcus had punched into the laundry-room wall, recordings of arguments, and messages in which he threatened to cut off her access to money. None showed him striking her, because he never had. His control had been quieter: passwords changed, accounts restricted, decisions made without discussion, apologies demanded from everyone except himself.

Maya's expression grew serious. "This isn't a misunderstanding. It's coercive control."

At noon, they went to family court seeking a temporary protective order. Marcus arrived with Rebecca, wearing the charcoal suit he used for important negotiations. He looked calm and wounded, the perfect concerned father.

He claimed Emma had become unstable after losing her mother the previous year. He said she resented his relationship with Ethan and had punished Lily by dragging her into the rain. Rebecca submitted a photograph of the packed emergency bag as proof of premeditation.

Then Marcus presented a statement allegedly written by Lily's school counselor.

It said Lily feared her mother.

Emma felt sick.

"That's not true," she whispered.

Maya requested time to verify the document. The judge granted Emma temporary physical custody but ordered both parents to remain in the county and prohibited either from discussing the case with Lily.

Outside the courtroom, Marcus stepped close enough that only Emma could hear.

"You could have come home," he said.

"You could have chosen your daughter."

His eyes hardened. "I chose both children. You're the one forcing a war."

That afternoon, Maya called the school counselor directly.

The woman had never written the statement.

The signature was forged.

Before they could report it, Lily's school called. Someone had attempted to pick her up using an emergency authorization bearing Emma's signature.

Security stopped the woman at the front desk.

It was Rebecca.
