Chapter 6 - WHAT MARCUS WAS HIDING
Confronted with the footage, Marcus finally admitted part of the truth.
He had known the first DNA test was unreliable.
Natalie's letter had devastated him, but when the laboratory asked for additional samples, Rebecca suggested paying an employee to "accelerate" the process. Marcus agreed to meet the technician. He claimed he believed the payment was for rush handling, not fabrication.
"You believed what you wanted to believe," Emma said.
They sat across from each other in Maya's conference room while attorneys watched.
Marcus looked older than he had a week earlier. "I thought I had abandoned my son."
"So you abandoned your daughter instead."
He flinched.
Emma described Lily's questions, the secret conversations, the piano promise, and the night in the rain. Marcus tried to explain that he intended to buy Lily another piano later. The defense sounded pathetic even to him.
Then Maya played a recovered voicemail between Marcus and Rebecca.
Rebecca: If Emma leaves, the evaluator will see instability.
Marcus: She won't leave.
Rebecca: Then make the house uncomfortable enough that she does.
Marcus lowered his head.
"Did you follow that advice?" Maya asked.
"I was angry."
"Did you provoke the argument about the piano?"
He said nothing.
That silence answered everything.
Marcus had not merely lost control. He had created a confrontation designed to make Emma leave, hoping her departure would strengthen his custody position and allow Ethan to move into the home.
But Rebecca's plan had gone further than Marcus expected. She had forged documents, manipulated evidence, and attempted to take Lily from school.
Why?
The answer emerged from her financial records. Rebecca was facing bankruptcy. Marcus had promised her a substantial legal retainer and a position managing a family trust if she secured guardianship of Ethan.
Before police could question her again, Rebecca disappeared.
Her car was found at the airport.
