Chapter 12 - Daniel Finally Explained Why He Left Claire in the Dark
Daniel requested a settlement conference.
Claire agreed.
Separate lawyers.
Separate rooms at first.
Then one joint session.
She used the wheelchair that day because the courthouse required long distances.
She no longer treated the chair as something Daniel had done to her.
That distinction felt important.
Daniel sat across from her.
No tie.
No Vanessa.
Claire asked:
“Why did you tell everyone I slipped alone?”
Daniel looked down.
“To protect Vanessa.”
“From the accident?”
“Yes.”
“And the transaction.”
“Yes.”
“And the affair.”
“Yes.”
Clean answers.
Finally.
Claire continued.
“Why reset my phone?”
“I panicked.”
“That does not explain deleting my evidence.”
“I knew the HP page was there.”
“Exactly.”
Daniel rubbed his palms together.
“If the board saw it, they would think Vanessa’s interest made the whole structure corrupt.”
“Wouldn’t they have deserved to know?”
“Yes.”
The answer came quietly.
Claire stared.
“When did you start believing you had the right to decide what everyone else deserved to know?”
Daniel looked toward the window.
“Probably Harbor Point.”
Claire waited.
Northline had spent years chasing Harbor Point.
Every time Daniel believed they were close to a major decision, Claire found another risk.
Environmental costs.
Construction pricing.
Debt structure.
Stonebridge economics.
“She was right a lot,” Daniel said, talking almost as though Claire were not there.
“Who?”
“You.”
Claire did not expect that.
“That made it worse.”
He felt increasingly irrelevant.
CEO on paper.
Husband at home.
But one Claire objection could delay millions.
“I thought if I could make one major deal work without you slowing it down, you’d finally trust me.”
Claire almost smiled sadly.
“And when I didn’t?”
“I stopped wanting your trust.”
He looked at her.
“I wanted your vote gone.”
There it was.
Daniel’s financial motive was ultimately emotional.
Control became proof of competence.
Vanessa made him feel admired.
Stonebridge made him feel decisive.
Claire’s accident removed resistance.
He combined all three.
Claire asked:
“Did you love Vanessa?”
Daniel took time.
“Yes.”
Claire believed him.
That surprised her.
He continued.
“I also loved that she agreed with me.”
Vanessa had not been only an affair.
She was an environment Daniel preferred.
Until she started disagreeing too.
That explained why her HP interest had already been reduced in the revised documents.
Once Vanessa developed her own leverage, Daniel began limiting it.
Same pattern.
Claire said:
“You didn’t want partners.”
Daniel looked at her.
“I wanted peace.”
“No.”
Claire shook her head.
“You wanted agreement.”
He did not argue.
Then Daniel asked something.
“Do you believe I tried to hurt you that night?”
Claire considered.
“No.”
His face changed.
“Thank you.”
“Don’t.”
She leaned forward.
“The evidence says you didn’t cause the fall.”
A pause.
“What you did afterward is still yours.”
Daniel nodded.
