Chapter 5 - Vanessa Had More to Lose Than the Affair
Vanessa’s affair with Daniel began fourteen months before Claire’s accident.
That was not the biggest thing she had hidden.
She also owned part of HP Management Partners.
Not fifteen percent.
Twenty-five.
The fifteen-percent figure came from the current draft.
An earlier operating agreement gave Vanessa twenty-five percent.
Why did it change?
Daniel had quietly amended it after Claire filed suit.
His own interest increased from thirty-five to forty-five.
Vanessa did not know.
When Rachel showed her the old and new drafts, Vanessa’s face changed.
“He told me my economics were protected.”
Claire almost smiled.
She didn’t.
Being betrayed by Daniel did not make Vanessa innocent.
Vanessa had negotiated the original structure without disclosing her interest to Northline’s board.
She knew Claire opposed it.
She knew Daniel planned to use Claire’s proxy.
She believed Daniel would eventually divorce Claire and that Vanessa would become his partner professionally and personally.
“Did he promise marriage?” Rachel asked.
Vanessa looked embarrassed.
“Yes.”
Claire looked away.
The answer hurt less than she expected.
Vanessa continued.
Daniel told her Claire would leave Northline after settlement.
Vanessa believed she would become president.
HP Management would eventually handle several Northline projects.
Her income could triple.
That gave Vanessa a powerful motive to help Daniel.
But it still did not explain the Harborlight.
Rachel asked:
“Why did you follow Claire into the service corridor?”
Vanessa looked toward her attorney.
Then answered.
“Her phone.”
Claire frowned.
“My phone?”
“You had photographed something.”
Claire remembered nothing.
Vanessa said Claire had confronted Daniel near the ballroom after meeting Kevin Ross.
Claire told him she knew HP Management was his idea.
Daniel tried to calm her.
Claire pulled out her phone.
She had photographed a page lying partly exposed inside Daniel’s leather portfolio.
An HP Management ownership schedule.
Daniel did not know she had the image until Claire said:
“Twenty-five percent, Vanessa?”
Claire turned toward Vanessa.
“So I knew.”
“You knew about the company.”
“And the affair?”
Vanessa looked down.
“No.”
That came later.
Claire had accused Daniel of secretly compensating Vanessa through HP Management.
Vanessa overheard.
Panicked.
She followed Claire into the corridor.
“Why?”
“I wanted the photo deleted.”
“You thought stealing my phone was easier than explaining?”
Vanessa’s face hardened.
“I thought you were going to destroy my career over a draft structure.”
“You had hidden ownership.”
“I know that now.”
Claire stared.
“You knew it then.”
Vanessa did not answer.
Then she said something Claire had not expected.
“I wasn’t sleeping with Daniel because I loved him.”
Claire laughed bitterly.
“That is extremely comforting.”
“I loved him later.”
Claire looked back.
Vanessa continued.
“The affair started after the HP structure.”
That mattered.
Daniel had first recruited Vanessa financially.
Personal betrayal followed professional secrecy.
Vanessa thought Daniel recognized her talent.
Claire had repeatedly questioned Vanessa’s aggressive acquisitions.
Daniel told Vanessa Claire was threatened by younger women in leadership.
Vanessa wanted to believe it.
Then admiration became intimacy.
The relationship did not excuse the transaction.
It explained why Vanessa became willing to protect it.
Rachel returned to the corridor.
“What happened after you followed Claire?”
Vanessa’s hands shook.
“I grabbed her phone.”
Claire became still.
“She pulled away.”
A pause.
“The service door was behind her.”
Claire stopped breathing.
Vanessa whispered:
May you like
“I thought you remembered.”
