Chapter 11 - Carol’s Condo Was Finally Ready

Carol’s condo finished construction in April.

Almost exactly one year late.

Two bedrooms.

Lake view.

Concierge desk.

A kitchen Carol immediately declared:

too small.

She moved in anyway.

Jason helped.

Emily did not.

Not because she refused.

Because Carol did not ask.

That was healthier.

The move became a test.

Carol wanted:

Jason every day for a week.

Jason said:

“I can help Saturday and Sunday.”

Carol replied:

“I need you Thursday.”

“I’m working.”

“Emily would make time.”

Jason stared at the message.

Old Jason would:

cancel.

New Jason replied:

Saturday and Sunday. If you need Thursday, hire the mover for an extra hour.

Carol sent no response for six hours.

Then:

Fine.

Nobody died.

Saturday, Jason assembled:

bookshelves,

TV mount,

dining table.

At five, he said:

“I’m leaving.”

Carol looked offended.

“We haven’t done the pantry.”

“Tomorrow.”

She started:

“When your father—”

Jason interrupted gently.

“Dad is not part of this conversation.”

Carol stopped.

Then nodded.

Progress.

Emily and Carol did not speak for almost three months after New Year’s.

Then Carol sent a letter.

Not email.

Handwritten.

I hit you because I wanted to establish that I could still force the room to move around me. I am ashamed of that.

Emily read that line twice.

Then:

I also treated Jason’s love as something that had to be proven through preference. If he protected you, I experienced it as losing him. That was unfair to both of you.

Then:

I still believe you used competence to dominate the house sometimes. I now understand that belief did not give me the right to override you.

That was the first apology Emily trusted because it did not require Carol to:

idealize her.

Emily replied:

I accept that you are sorry. I am not ready for you to be in my home again. I will tell you when that changes.

Carol responded:

Understood.

No guilt.

No Jason phone call.

No family campaign.

May you like

That was new.
