Chapter 13 - Emily Came Home After the House Stopped Being a Battlefield
Emily moved back in May.
No grand scene.
Two suitcases.
Three garment bags.
A box of books.
Jason carried one suitcase upstairs.
Did not say:
“Finally.”
Did not ask:
“Are we okay now?”
They were not finished.
They were:
trying.
The house felt different.
Carol’s guest suite had been converted back into:
guest room and reading room.
Not immediately.
Jason had waited until Emily agreed.
The utility room had changed too.
The wine cabinet was gone.
In its place:
clear access.
System plan mounted visibly.
Color-coded labels.
Emergency instructions.
Two laminated contact sheets.
Both Emily and Jason listed as:
authorized service contacts.
Jason had added one small note:
IF YOU DON’T KNOW, DON’T TOUCH IT. CALL NORTHSTAR.
Emily laughed.
“Very technical.”
“I’m basically an engineer now.”
“You know where the buffer tank is.”
“That’s senior management.”
They laughed.
Small.
Good.
Then finances.
Jason closed Carol’s authorized card.
Not because he distrusted her.
Because she no longer managed:
his household.
Carol kept:
her own finances.
Emily and Jason created a shared home-improvement account requiring both to approve projects above:
$5,000.
Not because paper fixes marriage.
Because clear thresholds reduce:
resentment.
Then they did something more difficult.
They stopped using the house as proof of:
status.
When Jason’s sister asked if Carol could stay for a week during a future renovation, Jason said:
“No.”
Emily asked later:
“Would you actually mind?”
Jason thought.
“Not for a week.”
Then:
“But I said no because I panicked.”
Interesting.
They revisited.
Invited Carol for:
three nights during the project.
Clear dates.
Carol accepted.
Stayed:
three nights.
Left on the fourth morning.
No drama.
That tiny visit rebuilt more trust than any speech could have.
Carol asked before:
moving a chair.
Emily almost laughed the first time.
“You can move the chair.”
Carol said:
“I’m practicing.”
