Chapter 5 - The Gift Became Evidence
Ryan stared at him.
Samuel looked at Jade.
“Do you have documentation?”
Jade handed him the folder.
“Yes.”
Miles glanced at the first page.
Then the second.
Then he looked at Vanessa.
“Are you employed by Hale Strategy Group?”
Vanessa’s mouth opened.
“I’m a consultant.”
Jade said, “She was paid through a consulting code attached to investor relations.”
Henry Vale looked at Ryan.
“Without disclosure?”
Ryan’s voice shook with anger.
“This is not the place.”
Jade’s smile was small.
“You chose the place when you parked my stolen car at the entrance.”
Vanessa started crying.
Jade did not comfort her.
Some women cry when the fantasy becomes paperwork.
Ryan tried to move the conversation upstairs.
The investors refused.
Hotel security was called.
Not to remove Jade.
To preserve footage of the valet area, the lobby confrontation, and the red car.
The dealership confirmed by phone that Jade was the registered owner.
The bank confirmed the payment source.
The insurance broker confirmed the policy.
The hotel confirmed Vanessa had been driving the car under Ryan’s authorization for weeks.
By midnight, Ryan was no longer inside the investor dinner.
He was inside a private conference room with attorneys on speaker and the life he had built on lies folding page by page.
Vanessa sat in the corner, mascara streaking, suddenly very interested in the difference between a gift and stolen property.
Jade sat across the table, hair still damp, black gown still wet from rain, expression calm.
Ryan glared at her.
“You smashed a quarter-million-dollar car.”
Jade looked at him.
“My car.”
“You made us look ridiculous.”
“No,” she said. “You did that when you gave my keys to your mistress.”
Vanessa whispered, “Ryan said it was his.”
Jade turned to her.
“I believe that.”
Vanessa blinked.
Ryan looked almost relieved.
Then Jade continued.
“But believing a lie doesn’t make you innocent once you use the lie to humiliate the person it hurts.”
Vanessa looked down.
Good.
Let her sit with that.
The next morning, the story moved faster than any of them expected.
Not because Jade posted the video.
She did not.
The hotel guests did.
Luxury car smashed outside Grand Meridian.
Wife destroys husband’s gift to mistress.
Chicago CEO exposed after giving wife’s car to girlfriend.
Most headlines were ridiculous.
They framed Jade as jealous.
Emotional.
Dramatic.
Then the investor statement dropped.
Hale Strategy Group announces emergency financial review following allegations of unauthorized use of company funds and forged approvals.
The tone changed quickly after that.
Jealous wife became guarantor.
Mistress car became financial misconduct.
Smashed windshield became evidence photographed before repair.
Ryan tried to control the narrative.
He released a statement saying he and Jade were separated and the car had been a “personal arrangement.”
Jade’s attorney replied with the marriage date, shared accounts, purchase documents, and a cease-and-desist regarding false statements.
