Chapter 8 - What Else He Thought You Wouldn’t Check

Years later, people still told the dramatic version.

The rainy Chicago night.

The glowing hotel entrance.

The red luxury sports car.

Jade standing soaked in a black evening gown, golf club lowered in one hand, key fob in the other.

Ryan smirking behind her.

Put that down before you embarrass yourself.

Jade raising the club.

Vanessa’s smile disappearing.

The single swing.

CRACK.

Vanessa screaming, That’s my car!

Jade lowering the club.

No. It was never yours.

Then the key fob.

The papers.

He bought it with my money, insured it in my name, then handed you the keys.

And finally, Jade walking away through the rain.

Both of you can go to hell.

It sounded like revenge.

And yes, part of it was.

But Jade knew the deeper victory was quieter.

It was reading the documents he thought she would never request.

It was watching investors understand fraud faster than Ryan understood consequences.

It was learning that a mistress can drive your car only if someone first steals your keys.

It was selling the shattered symbol and turning it into help for people whose signatures had been used against them.

It was no longer mistaking public anger for shame.

And it was Jade, years later, standing beside a young woman at a bank counter while the woman cried over loan papers her husband had forged.

The woman whispered, “I feel stupid.”

Jade placed a hand gently near the folder.

“No,” she said. “You feel betrayed.”

The woman looked at her.

“What do I do now?”

Jade slid a black key fob across the table.

Not for a car.

May you like

For the office of the Key Fob Fund.

“Now,” Jade said, “we find out what else he thought you wouldn’t check.”
