Chapter 2 - THE MARRIAGE BEFORE OUR MARRIAGE

The document in the hidden compartment was not legally registered.
It was private.
A “commitment covenant” prepared by attorney Nathan Vale.
Daniel and Celeste agreed to marry after Daniel secured control of the Hale trust and completed a five-year public marriage to “a financially suitable partner.”
Me.
The covenant promised Celeste twenty percent of all assets acquired through Daniel’s marriage to me.
It included a timetable.
Year one: establish social credibility.
Year two: integrate Elise’s family investments.
Year three: isolate Elise from advisers.
Year four: document instability.
Year five: dissolve marriage or trigger incapacity.
We were four years and eight months into our marriage.
The black sports car’s compartment also held my missing passport, copies of my medical records, and a vial of medication prescribed by Dr. Stephen Cross.
Cross was the private physician Victoria insisted I see after I began having headaches.
The headaches started after Daniel replaced my morning vitamins.
I had blamed stress.
Then memory.
Then grief.
My father died two years earlier.
Daniel handled part of the estate because I could barely sleep.
I believed he helped me.
The evidence showed he used the fog.
Priya requested independent toxicology.
My blood contained a low-dose sedative and stimulant combination.
Enough to create anxiety, confusion, and erratic sleep.
Enough to support Cross’s diagnosis.
Not enough to incapacitate me completely.
They wanted me functional enough to sign.
Unstable enough to discredit.
The wedding ended.
Guests were escorted away.
Lucas and his bride remained.
He confronted Victoria in the library.
“Did you know about the covenant?”
“No.”
The car audio later proved she knew about the plan, but not the original covenant.
Daniel and Celeste had also lied to her.
They promised Victoria the trust would remain under Hale family control.
The covenant transferred part to Celeste.
Every alliance contained a hidden betrayal.
Victoria looked at Daniel.
“You were going to give her family our money?”
Celeste snapped, “Your money? The Marrows kept your hotels alive.”
Lucas said, “Elise’s father kept the hotels alive.”
That was true.
My father, James Mercer, invested forty million dollars during the Hale Group’s near-bankruptcy.
In return, he received trust rights and placed my future shares under the Hale Family Legacy structure after my marriage.
He believed a shared trust would protect both families.
Instead, it gave Daniel access.
Then Detective Claire Nolan searched the villa.
The wedding suite contained two sets of luggage.
Lucas and his bride’s bags.
And Celeste’s.
Inside Celeste’s suitcase:
A marriage license application naming Daniel as groom.
Dated the following morning.
She intended to marry Daniel less than twenty-four hours after Lucas’s wedding.
How?
My death certificate had already been prepared.
Not filed.
Prepared.
Cause:
Single-vehicle accident.
Location:
Canyon Road.
The road I drove every Monday to visit my father’s memorial garden.
The black sports car’s logs showed Daniel testing remote steering functions on that route.
The car belonged to him.
But he had recently encouraged me to drive it.
Said it was safer than mine.
The accident in Victoria’s recording was not metaphor.
It had a route.
A vehicle.
A death certificate.
Then the police found a second key fob in Celeste’s bag.
It controlled the same car.
Daniel could drive from the passenger seat.
Celeste could trigger systems remotely.
The plan required me behind the wheel.
The wedding provocation was supposed to push me into leaving angrily.
Victoria would insult me.
Daniel would grab me.
Celeste would reveal the affair.
I would take the sports car because my own vehicle had been blocked by valet cars.
Then they would send me down Canyon Road.
The officers had arrived because Priya warned them.
I arrived with the key because I knew enough to prepare.
But I had not known the marriage license.
Or the death certificate.
Priya looked at me.
“You were supposed to die tonight.”
My knees weakened.
Lucas caught my arm.
Daniel watched from the doorway under police guard.
Then he smiled faintly.
“You think Celeste planned this for money?”
Celeste turned toward him.
“What are you doing?”
He looked at Victoria.
“Ask her who chose Canyon Road.”
Victoria’s face changed.
Lucas whispered, “Mom?”
Victoria sat down.
Her hands trembled.
“I only wanted Elise frightened.”
“Frightened into what?” I asked.
“Signing the trust release.”
“You chose the route.”
“Cross said the car could stop safely.”
Daniel laughed.
“Cross said whatever you paid him to say.”
Celeste moved toward Daniel.
“You told me Victoria wanted an accident.”
“She did.”
“Not death.”
“No,” Daniel said. “You did.”
The alliance shattered.
Celeste slapped him.
Officer Mason pulled her back.
Then she shouted, “He changed the steering test! I only authorized a brake warning.”
Daniel looked at her calmly.
“You signed the marriage license.”
“Because you said Elise would be institutionalized.”
Another plan.
Another lie.
I was supposed to die for Daniel.
Be frightened for Victoria.
Be institutionalized for Celeste.
Each person expected a different ending.
All required me to lose control.
Then Detective Nolan brought a recovered tablet.
The deleted group chat contained four participants.
Daniel.
Celeste.
Victoria.
Cross.
A fifth user had entered only twice.
Username:
MERCER01.
My father’s surname.
The first message read:
ELISE CANNOT LEARN WHAT JAMES HID IN THE TRUST.
My father had concealed something before his death.
Something so dangerous that Daniel built an entire marriage around controlling me.
Then another message from MERCER01:
THE ORIGINAL LEDGER IS INSIDE THE WEDDING GIFT.
I looked toward the shattered box on the car.
The encrypted drive I had placed inside came from Priya.
But the box itself had belonged to my father.
Stored unopened for years.
I had reused it because of the blue ribbon.
Beneath the broken velvet lining, Priya found a second compartment.
Inside was a handwritten ledger.
My father’s handwriting.
May you like
And on the first page:
DANIEL HALE IS NOT VICTORIA’S SON.
