Chapter 3 - THE SON WHO WAS PURCHASED

Victoria denied it.
Then admitted it.
Daniel stood under guard in the library.
He looked at the ledger as if it were a weapon pointed at his childhood.
Victoria said Daniel was adopted privately.
No formal agency.
No public record.
Her husband, Charles Hale, believed Daniel was biologically theirs through a private surrogate.
The embryo transfer had failed.
The clinic arranged another infant.
A mother in debt.
A sealed payment.
A falsified birth certificate.
Victoria knew.
Charles did not.
Daniel grew as the Hale heir.
Lucas was born naturally three years later.
Charles never treated them differently.
Victoria did.
She protected Daniel more.
Excused more.
Needed the lie to succeed.
My father discovered the truth during the Hale Group bailout.
The same clinic was connected to financial fraud and illegal adoptions.
He kept the ledger as leverage to protect his investment.
Daniel learned about it before marrying me.
He believed controlling me meant controlling the evidence.
But the ledger held more.
Payment records.
Clinic names.
Children transferred to wealthy families.
Doctors.
Attorneys.
Northbridge Bank accounts.
Dr. Cross’s name appeared repeatedly.
Nathan Vale’s too.
The Hale trust fraud was connected to a private adoption network.
Daniel was both beneficiary and product.
He stared at Victoria.
“You bought me?”
“I saved you.”
“From what?”
“Your mother had nothing.”
“What was her name?”
Victoria looked down.
Daniel stepped forward until the officer stopped him.
“What was her name?”
“Maria Bennett.”
The room tilted.
Maria Bennett had worked for my father.
His longtime bookkeeper.
She disappeared twenty-eight years earlier.
My father told me she embezzled money and fled.
The ledger told another story.
Maria discovered the adoption network.
She became pregnant by Charles Hale during a brief affair.
Victoria learned.
The clinic took the baby.
Daniel.
Maria was paid, threatened, and later disappeared.
Charles never knew Daniel was his biological son through Maria.
The false surrogate story hid both affair and trafficking.
Daniel was biologically a Hale.
But not Victoria’s.
Lucas looked at his mother.
“You stole Dad’s child from another woman.”
Victoria shouted, “I raised him!”
“After erasing her.”
Daniel’s face became unreadable.
For the first time, I saw the child beneath his cruelty.
Then he looked at me.
“Your father knew.”
“Yes.”
“He let me marry you.”
The ledger showed my father suspected Daniel had become involved with Northbridge transfers.
He did not know the full incapacity plan.
Still, he allowed the marriage.
Why?
A note in the margin:
KEEP ELISE CLOSE TO HALE RECORDS UNTIL MARIA IS FOUND.
My father used my marriage to investigate.
I sat down.
Every man in my life had called secrecy protection.
Daniel.
My father.
Charles through ignorance.
Even Lucas perhaps later.
I had been placed inside a family strategy before I understood the board.
Then Detective Nolan searched the username MERCER01.
The account was active after my father’s death.
Someone else used his identity.
The login originated from a retirement community in Santa Barbara.
Maria Bennett was alive.
Priya and I drove there under police protection.
Maria was seventy-four.
Thin.
Silver hair.
Sharp eyes.
She opened the door before we knocked.
“You look like James.”
I wanted to say she looked like Daniel.
Instead, I asked why she used my father’s account.
“He asked me to.”
“When?”
“Before he died.”
My father found Maria three years earlier.
He apologized for believing the embezzlement story.
She had not stolen.
Victoria and Cross framed her.
James planned to expose the network.
Then he died from a stroke.
Or what doctors called a stroke.
Cross signed the hospital review.
Again.
Maria said James feared Daniel had already found the ledger.
He asked her to watch the trust and send warnings.
She entered the group chat to mislead them.
She told them the ledger was inside the wedding gift because Priya planned to place evidence there.
“How did you know what box I would use?”
“James gave it to you for your wedding.”
I remembered.
My father handed me the silver box the morning I married Daniel.
He said, “Use it when you finally decide what marriage gave you.”
I thought he meant jewelry.
The box had been empty.
The hidden compartment was not.
He had placed the ledger inside before my wedding.
I carried it into Daniel’s house.
Then stored it unopened.
My father made me an evidence courier without consent.
The realization hurt even though it protected me years later.
Maria saw it.
“He was wrong to use you.”
“Why did you help?”
“Because Daniel was becoming dangerous.”
“Did you know about tonight?”
“Not the full plan.”
Then she handed me a photograph.
Daniel at age fourteen.
Standing beside Maria.
He knew her.
Victoria said he had never met his birth mother.
Maria said Daniel found her as a teenager.
He asked questions.
She told him the truth.
He promised to expose Victoria.
Then vanished from her life.
Years later, he returned.
Not as a son.
As a businessman.
He wanted the adoption records.
Maria refused.
Daniel threatened to accuse her of blackmail.
The network had taught him exactly what family truth was worth.
Then Maria showed me a recording.
Daniel:
“If Elise inherits James’s ledger, I need access.”
Maria:
“Marry her if you want. She will still see you.”
Daniel:
“She sees what she loves.”
The recording was dated six months before our engagement.
Our marriage had been planned from the beginning.
Not by Victoria.
By Daniel.
The affair with Celeste was later.
The theft later.
But the foundation was fraud.
Then Maria said, “There is one person Daniel fears more than the police.”
“Who?”
“Charles Hale.”
Daniel’s father.
Charles was believed dead.
Heart attack five years earlier.
Closed casket.
Cross signed that death too.
Maria believed Charles was alive.
Held inside a private medical residence under another name.
The same network used to erase inconvenient elders.
May you like
If Charles lived, he could expose Victoria, Cross, the clinic, and the true ownership of the Hale trust.
And according to Maria, Daniel knew exactly where he was.
